Good afternoon,
I've started to look at new/nearly new cars as my M3 will be back of to BMW in June. I have been told that it is no longer possible to order a new GTS but GTS 4s are still being built to order. Is there a big difference between them? How 'corrupted' is the steering due to the front diff?
I test drove a GTS a couple of days ago and have not stopped smiling since discovering how the car drives and I was surprised just how comforable it is. I am going to test drive a GTS 4 tomorrow or Tuesday to compare but does one really need 4wd and will I still be able to turn the TC off and have fun on trackdays?
My partner loves the car, and would prefer 4wd as we live in Germany, but she is adiment that it is not practical enough to have as our only car. I have been looking at, amoungst anothers, an M3, RS5, TTRS and a C class Coupe AMG and I am due for a test drive in the Merc tomorrow. How do people manage with a 997 as an only car? I rarely have to take more that two people anywhere and I am sure that creative packing would work for when we go away for a holiday.
Is it possible to have the 90l fuel tank with the GTS 4 and re there any 'must have' options? I have heard the standard stereo and it is crap so have ticked the BOSE option. The car I test drove also had the standard shift. Is the short shift much better as I found the normal one sweet and very direct.
Thanks for reading through my ramblings.
Pete

Depends what you are after, it,s just a C2s imo not a mini GT3 like some state, i was not that impressed with it, but was expecting the Mini Gt3 experience
I own a TTRS it,s makes a great daily drive, cheap to run also, and with a remap 997 turbo speed, so would leave a gts long gone.
You won,t find a 1car does all , so only YOU know what you are after in a car.

I have had a read through the GTS thread and I didn't find questions about the fuel tank or the short shift. I'll have another look though.
TTRS could be fun but I found my brother's B7 RS4 a bit boring so I am shying away from Audis, apart from the R8, but that is simply a no go at the moment. I realise only I can judge what is right for me but I am not the only one who has influence over this decision!
I have never driven a GT3, although thatis the Porsche I want, but the GTS was stunning. Unfortuately keeping the M3 and getting a GT3 is not an option
Thanks for the relpies.

Am currently in similar position and was talking with my local dealer on Friday - certainly a deal to be had on the GTS 4 as opposed to waiting for a 991 and spending more or of course spending less and going used.I am lucky in as much as already have Gen 2 GT3 but the GTS would need to be an everyday car and take kids in the back sometime. Have looked at Nissan GTR - underwhelmed and back seats useless - both C63 and M3 may be more practical but depreciation on new is painful - you only have to look at the dealers offers to work that out.Tbh wouldnt normally have considered going 4 wheel drive - understeers slightly in the rain ( seems paradoxic ) and am sure in snow will be as indifferent as a C2 ( depending on tyres ) but if you want new 997 then no option.I cannot think of anything else that you probably havent already considered.Good as the GTS is it isnt a close alternative to the GT3 - thats in a league of its own but wouldnt necessarily want to drive it every day.
I've run a 997 C4S for the last three years as our only family car and it's been fine taking me, the wife and our now nine year old. We've had to pack it carefully when driving to go on holiday for a week but the wife hasn't complained (much) about having to limit the amount we take.
On the 2 vs 4 thing. I've driven both a fair bit and found the 4 to be noticeably more confidence inspiring. A Porsche salesman once told me that it's only on for 5% of the time (he was trying to sell me a 2WD 997). That may be true but it's on during the 5% of the time when you need it and will feel it.
Re steering feel. I haven't found there to be a difference but I've never driven them back to back so can't be sure.

I personally think the GTS2 is a bit more 'special' as it is the only wide body 4 seater 2WD 911 you can get.
For me I love the 2wd cars, need a back seat and like the look of the fat arse so it ticked all my boxes and I don't regret the decision at all.
As for the stereo, the Gen2 standard is actually pretty good - to the point that despite having Bose in my previous 911s I never bothered in this one.
For 2 of you, the boot combined with the rear space gives plenty of luggage space, it is fairly economical on a steady run and can handle large mileage with no problems. I tried to get the 90l fuel tank option, but despite the press info on this - it didn't seem to be an option on UK cars?

Drive both cars and then make up your mind. Lots here on PH talk as if they drive at 9-10/10ths on the road all the time where hanging the rear of a 2wd 911 is the norm. Trust me, it isn't.
For ROAD use, the GTS4 is a stunning road 911. It adopts the latest PTM as used by the 997.2 Turbo. PTM is almost imperceptible in going from 2wd to 4wd. The best thing of PTM is it allows the 911 to feel 2wd when you want it, but gives you 4wd traction and stability when you actually want it.
BIG advantage the GTS4 has over the GTS2 is the mechanical rear diff that you can really feel working to your advantage powering through and out of corners. Under acceleration, you can feel PTM keeping things very biased towards 2wd and allowing the rear diff to work as it should. The GTS2 does not have the rear diff as standard and is a cost option. Most GTS2s I have seen does NOT have this vital drivers option selected.
If it's for the road, and you drive in all weathers, I think the GTS4 gives you the best of all worlds. PTM is a very effective traction management system that does not compromise the driver involvement. Over very fast flowing roads that pitches/undulates/rocks with camber, PTM is great at keeping the 911 from breaking away at sudden moments when you want to maintain progress. If you want a 911 to drive at 10/10ths and hang the rear at every opportunity, you should be thinking of the GT3.
I drove the 991S vs the GTS4 and found the GTS4 to be just as engaging a drive on the road, with better stability around very tight bends. I cancelled my 991 order and bought a new GTS4. Don't forget that all 4wd widebody 911s since the 993 onwards have held stronger residuals than their 2wd variants...

Wasted so much time registering that Spareparts beat me to it! Almost word for word what I planned to say.
Took a GTS4 out twice on long test drives on wet and cold roads in Scotland. Made a huge impression on me. Much more so than the 991S I tried on the same roads.
Result being that I have ordered a new GTS4 PDK for April delivery.
90 litre tank is not an option, only available for 2WD.
Cheers,
Matt

Sorry Matt, did not intend to steal your thunder. But great move on the GTS4! You are going to love it. Took a GTS4 out twice on long test drives on wet and cold roads in Scotland. Made a huge impression on me. Much more so than the 991S I tried on the same roads.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm back off to the dealer tomorrow to have a drive in the GTS4 and go through the figures again. Shame that there are no deals here to be had on a new car. Girlfriend is still convinced about the practical side of things and, after speaking with my parents who are car nuts, they agreed! Seems I am being backed into a corner! Wish me luck!

4WD is the one to go for if wanting to get their as quick as possible in all weather conditions.
Good luck. I have a very good mate
who is happy to lend me and the missus his GTS2 with pdk. Another good mate has driven it for a while and like me, died in the wool old air cooled stuff and he loved it. It bloody scares me that I might really like it. What scares me more is that the missus will really like it. Even scarier is that quite a few times lately she's used the term Porsche instead of Smart. I think I better tell her he sold it just to be safe

I have a couple cars but use the GTS almost every day. If you don't need the rear seats, it's a perfect everyday car. With PDK it bumbles along in traffic in auto mode, if you want to give it hell...just stick it in Sport Plus and use the paddles and you'll fly.
Reliable, looks nice but doesn't attract too many vandels, great car.

Mine has the short shifter. I like it. It's a little stiff when cold but once the gearbox oil has warmed up, it's fantastic!
You definitely can't get a 90litre fuel tank on the 4WD variant and it wasn't an option in the UK.
I had an E92 M3 before but the GTS is in a completely different league.
I manage to do our weekly shop in mine, even with 2 kids in the back. There's actually a reasonable amount of space behind the seats and the boot is bigger than you think.
It's also good at everything. More comfortable than the M3 and much better steering and handling. PSE is a bonus too as it sounds great.
Personally, I found that 4WD diluted the steering feel but this is very subjective, so you'll need to see what you think after your test drive. There may still be some pre-registered GTS 2s in dealerships. Might be worth asking around if you're interested?

With regards to deals being had there are none to speak of in Germany even for unregistered stock.
The dealer had a look through his computer and there were only 2 manual coupes in the entire country that were not white or black and one had a crap spec! These were both offered at or just, and I mean a few hundred euros, below the rrp.
If I can come back with a good price today then hopefully my girlfriend can see past the practicality 'issues' and I can put the order in.
Thanks again for the replies

Not surprising Porsche are not offering deals as it is still BTO and the last of the line 997 with strong residuals.
Strong residuals ? I have seen close to new cars >10koff.I would want a big discount on an outgoing model.
