Hi, not a regular around here smile

Parents have bought surround sound, both TV and surround are Samsung. When watching a DVD it works perfectly but not with TV. The Sky box is not hd so there is a scart going from Sky box to TV. Then a HDMI cable from TV to Surround box. To get any sound to work with TV I have just used component cables from Sky box to surround, thus when watching TV sound only comes out of FL and FR speakers.
Help.

Thanks in advance I hope it kinda makes sense. smile

You will only get surround if the reveiver is being fed a surround signal like 5.1. In your set up it isnt as the signal to the tv from sky through the scart will only be stereo.

Thanks.", I've looked into it a bit and I think I need a digital optical cable going from the sky box to the surround box?

I think you will also need to turn on the surround sound in the Sky menus (after you have connected the optical cable).

Unfortunately OP, that's what it's going to do.

On Sky, only the HD channels transmit audio in 5.1. Everything else is just stereo.
Nope - the Standard Def Movie channels transmit DD5.1.
To be honest - it's very rare for any channels other than the movie ones (SD & HD) to transmit in DD. otherwise, the best you'll get is ProLogic 2 (which you should be able to get via the SCART socket).
