Ah. A job for later when the finances improve. And when I find a Lucas service centre.

Also: The exhaust has arrived! The down side. It's in Surrey.

Hi Chris,

Let us know what it is like once fitted, was it from LeeBee or Peninsular, I canna remember!

Any opinions on my dilema.....

My Stainless job is beginning to tarnish and corrode a bit and has a split where the first single pipe joins the box - not due to corrosion more likely the last speed ramp that I hit. The baffles have also gone and it sounds crap now.

Would it be cheaper to have mine opened and baffles removed/fixed and have the split welded or just replace with a new system?

In my experience with exhausts, welding just puts off the inevitable...

As mentioned previously on this forum, don't remove the baffles... it'll sound good, but you will actually lose power...

Does removing baffles make a great deal of difference to performance?

I didn't think back pressure is a good thing but free flow is??

Also, will I get pulled over because of noise?

My systems a JP one from ACT. Unfortunately my parents are off this weekend to the USA, so I'll have to wait until they come back to fit it

I've had it straight through with no baffles, but (heeding the back pressure advice from Podie) JP have made the internal diameter slightly smaller to compensate for the loss of the baffles and give me more back pressure.

Personally if the whole thing is going a bit west I would go with a new exhaust if you can afford it. My std system is defintiely on the way out; it's been patched so many times and is getting worse.

I listned to Dale's (mycroft) exhaust from Penninsular this weekend and it sounds nice! Will do a before and after when I fit mine.

Right... here we go... (again!)

When I was looking to replace my exhaust a while back, I did some research. The general opinion was that the cats on cars of this age were useless. Poorly setup, and poorly designed... and at this age, full of so the decision was taken to bin them. If you're in this catagory, you're looking at £50-£80 per side for de-cat pipes. The bonus is a better response, and a louder exhaust - although interestingly de-catted cars seem to sound different to their non-catted counterparts.

As for the exhaust themselves... I had an ACT sourced S/S exhaust fitted. Following this I spoke to one of the original exhaust engineers from Ford who worked on the Cologne engine... he said that you should NOT remove the baffles from the V6 cars... as you will lose performance. I did get a technical waffling about pressure and equalisation or something, but it was over my head. I recently spoke to Psychobert who has a "Blue Flame" system on his, which is straight through... he was advised that he should have some baffles put in, as he's losing power.

Aside from that, stainless steel manifolds sound raspier than mild steel ones, and will change the sound of the car. As anyone who has heard mine will know... it's quite distinctive.. and sounds different to other S's (ask Slamm - we compared cars).

Oh, and mine was measured at PistonFest by TVR Bob... 127.7dBA measured as you would at a track (2/3 rev limit)...

I do listen!

127dB!! Bl**dy Hell!! That's loud!! I would love some SS manifolds.

PS

If you ask Podie will evilly tempt you to buy a SS exhaust by sending you mpeg clips of his car until you crack!

He is thanks to him I have bought an S3 and a SS exhuast system!

Trust me mate.. it's worthwhile..

Yeah... the 127.7dBA is loud... I've kinda got used to it though (explains why I'm going deaf! )... also explains why I set car alarms off when I hoof past parked vehicles..!

What is the standard configuration for a 2.9 exhaust?

Single box with twins in and out?

Single box with single in coupling to twin manifolds with a songle out branching into twin tail pipes?

I think (IIRC) that mines manifolds joining into a single large pipe into silencer and exits as a single pipe branching into twin tail pipes.

Mine is your first configuration, two manifolds into two short downpipes, into two pipes which enter the single rectangular box and two pipes exiting box right through to the two tailpipes, each pipe from the box is straight up to near the tailpies where each has a slight and different kink in it.

That is all from memory, but I think thats right.

The standard is to pipes in and two pipes out of the box, but internally it is one flow through the box, so should not make any difference as long as the flow, and back pressure is maintained.

Mine is 2 manifolds going into 2 90 degree bending down pipes, which joint to the exhaust seperately in an oval section which then goes in to a rectangular back box. Then 2 pipes exit the back box.

Thanks for that Darren, I'll double check mine tonight.

I'm sure mine drops to a single pipe in and out of the box.

I think some people seem to have 2 boxes on their V6, I've heard mention of two before. Must quieten it down a bit which I'm not looking to do really. It has to be LOUD!

JP Exhausts replied with a price of £420 + VAT for either standard or sport variation.

Isn't that more than ACT charge for a JP system??

That's what I don't understand either Chris.

JP charge more than ACT do for a selling a JP exhaust.

Strange eh!

I know where I'll be buying my JP system from, good old ACT!

Best keep this to ourselves or the price may go up!

The entire system on mine (from manifold onwards) is from ACT on my car...

If you're free on Sunday, why not come to the Mid-Essex meet...?

Mine came from ACT. Was delivered today. £379+VAT. A good buy. Ask Podie for the mpeg of his car. Sounds great. 127 dB!

"From the manifolds onwards" or backwards!

Yours sticks out of the front?

Just kidding!

That sounds a good idea to get together, depends though on whether we will have any viewings on our house. We need to get the place sold again or we'll miss the place we want and have spent money on already.

I hope I can make it, would be nice to get together and meet some of the S clan!

Onwards... as in the way the exhaust gases travel!

I'll mail you my mobile number...

If any other S owners fancy a trip to Mid-Essex on Sunday, drop me a line... convoy through Essex villages (they were sleepy).. and then a full on carbery for under a tenner...!

Thanks Podie, I'll pick up your number from my home e-mail later and as long as we have no serious viewings I'll tell Mrs Kentish I'm taking her out for a spot of Sunday lunch (just happens to be in Essex around loads of other S's)!

I may not mention the last bit until our approach!
