Back box on the parents Citroen is looking rather sorry for itself, but otherwise very solid, and as a semi-preventative measure to protect it in anticipation of replacing the whole system in say 6-12 months time, is there any compelling reason why I can't use exhaust (manifold insulating) tape to wrap it in the meantime /technical semi-numpty. No MOT / effectiveness issues at all? Thanks in advance.

Heat wrap could get soaking and stay wet, rusting backbox unless you get it really hot every time.

Thanks 1point7bar - Thought this might be an issue. I swear the tin foil I used for the roast today is thicker that the stuff Citroen used to make this system!

You can get the exhaust bandages which do work (I used one on a small hole on my VFR exhaust, lasted for about 2 years before I swapped it) but you don't get a lot in a pack and I think IT has to get quite hot to actually 'set'. All it consists of is some foil, a heat setting fibreglass type tape and some wire to hold it in place until it sets.

I'd be tempted to just use exhaust putty with some heavy duty foil and some stainless wire...

Bodgery yes but as long as it isn't going to fall off there's nothing wrong with it.
