Does your cat go missing for hours/days?
Discussion
Gabbie the cat never goes out for more than an hour maximum and even then she is usually found in the garden or nearby...
However, we have not seen her since yesterday (Sunday) afternoon 3pm ish, and I am so worried! Gabbie never misses a meal time!! I have checked the shed and garage and all around locally calling her name but she is nowhere to be found, I am going to call the RSPCA and local Vet when they open and ask if she has been taken in, although she is chipped she does not wear a collar as she just loses them and hates wearing them..
my mind is racing thinking the worst, but o/h keeps saying "its a cat, they do this" is this the case? do your cats do this?
a sick with worry cat mummy!!!

Yes, cats can do this. Some of ours do/did, others not so. I wouldn't worry about an overnight stop, when it gets to 2-3 days it's time to get the posters up in the local area - I'd also be asking neighbours to check their sheds/garages in case she snuck in there over the weekend (found our cat in a shed a few doors down).
UPDATE - she has been found, dead
I opened the curtains about 7.30am and screamed she was lay on the grass just meters from the house, I am so gutted beyond belief
my partner came home from work and looked at her and there is not a mark on her, she looked asleep on her side, we dont know what happened to our poor girl. We could have taken her to the vet but what is the point, my poor fluffball has gone and nothing will take her back. We have just buried her in a nice spot in the garden and i will make it a nice little garden for her, I am so upset I loved that cat, she was my shadow and followed me around all day and then followed my other half every morning too.I know she died trying to come home from whatever has happened and that gives me comfort that she knew where home was and where she was cared for and loved.
I loved that fluffer, my boy cat has gone into her bed, he NEVER goes in there but he must know... special love to my boy today he has lost his little pest of a sister

We lost our cat a few months ago, he got hit by a car. I arrived home, and about 10 minutes later my neighbour brought him to my door, as she has found him on our road. I'm pretty sure Nelson recognised my car (or the nouise it makes), as he usually trotted round the corner as I got back, so I think he may have been coming to see me and just didn't check for cars
He was less than a year old. It really horrible losing a pet, and I really do feel for you. It's hard to explain to people who don't have pets just how much you do love them, and how much you morn them when they're gone. I still think about my Nelson every day, and still miss him greatly - it's making me pretty sad writing about him now.
I really don't think I can say anything in these situations except that you have my sympathies! It does get easier, and you will always have fantastic memories of your little furry friend.

I'm so sorry for your loss, that is just so sad. Did you let her brother see her first, it will help him accept what has happened.
I understand your thoughts and you are right that nothing will bring your dear little friend back but the vet may have been able to help you with some answers. The likliehood is a road accident, signs can be as subtle as just scuffed claws and nothing more.
Again I am so sorry, I dread this sort of thing happening to any of mine

That is terrible news. The nature of it seems a bit odd though - were there any signs of what had caused it? (Tasteless question but did you make sure it was dead?)
Very sorry for you.
very sure she was dead, rigamortis kind of made this clear...Very sorry for you.
my other half picked her up and inspected her, no blood or signs of anything at all, its going round in my head as i just dont know what could have happened to her

thank you, I know what you mean with the car noises, everytime myself or my partner drove into the drive both cats always appeared to greet us, I dare say i will cry buckets when she is not there

thanks Bex, I said to o/h i think it must have been a road accident, but then that does not explain where she was all yesterday evening which was strange, she definately was not in the garden last night i was out looking throughout the evening and checked one last time before bed... I know what you are saying it would have given answers, she is buried now as I just didnt know what to do with her this morning so got o/h to bury her before he got back to work

and yes im sure my other cat seen her, he went out this morning and he is behaving very strangely now, he is lay in her bed and he never lays there

Sorry to hear this news OP.
Just reading the thread title brought back memories of this time last year when our cat didn't come in for the night (which was highly unusual). Then when you posted that she was dead, and just lying down without a mark; I could have written exactly the same back then. Ours was found by my girlfriend just lying in our back garden, no marks, no signs of struggle or even panic; just looked like he lay down and didn't get up.
The vet checked him over reasonably thoroughly (we wanted to know what happened) but could find no reason for his death, no sign of heart attack, poisoning or any physical trauma at all. Nothing health-wise wrong at all. That likely means that he didn't suffer much.
It was a very painful drive back from the vets without him. Still so when I think of it. My sympathies.

It just seemed strange to find a cat lying dead on the lawn. Cats in pain or distress usually hide.
This is the end of a poem that cracks me up every time I read it:
'Sleep soft, dear friend
For while I live you shall not die'
Not uncommon at all. A lot of cats (post trauma) struggle back to where they know and feel safe only to die in the front garden, drive, even on the door step. It's usually old cats or those that have been poorly a while that will go off to hide near the end. This is the end of a poem that cracks me up every time I read it:

Thanks for that, I would like to know what happened but I guess I will never know and I need to stop torturing myself thinking about it, these little fluffballs definately leave a pawprint on our heartsJust reading the thread title brought back memories of this time last year when our cat didn't come in for the night (which was highly unusual). Like many have said to me this morning, she was trying to get back home, I take comfort knowing that as she knew i would take care of her (dead or alive) it was the pathway from the gate to the house that she was on...This is the end of a poem that cracks me up every time I read it:

thank you

Thank you all for the kind words and thoughts (OP's other half here by the way).
Although I should hand in my membership card for saying so I am sobbing reading this thread and thinking of our little girl.
Its nice to know other people understand that pets have a massive place in our hearts.

Not at all, I am close to tears just reading it. Frankly, I fail to see how anyone can not cry when they lose a pet (which is a member of the family).
