Hi guys
Should I be worried about a 2011 Golf that is already on its second owner and has only done 3100 miles? The seller says he is selling to start a business but of course I can't be sure. I will get any car I want to buy checked by the AA but don't want to shell out for that if there are other alarm bells.
It's reasonably priced as almost all other similar cars are from VW dealers and therefore higher priced.
Any other research I could do before travelling to view it to arranging an inspection.
Thanks
Gav

It could be an ex-Demo or pre-registered car?

Would it be the dealer is the first owner and him being the second? So in reality only he has owned it?

First owner may have bought it and couldnt afford it?

The first owner may not have used it much at all so sold it for something cheaper?

The owner might of got pregnant with quadroplets so went and got a mini bus?

Too many variables to say if its dodgy or not.

most likely, ask what the first name on the log book it.
no reason why it would be dodgy, if in doubt find out supplying dealer (could be on number plate, on PDi inspection, tax disk) ring their service department and ask if they have seen it and if so what was the mileage.

If he has the logbook, it has the previous keeper on it so it should be easy enough to see if it's a pre-reg.

Thanks chaps. I realise there could be many legit reasons and so am keen to know how to verify them.

Look at HIS V5 - the previous owner will be listed. Who was it?

Yes will need to get that from him over the phone as the car is about an hour's drive away.

That might answer your queries, it could be that it was, as above, pre registered.

Saying that, what would you class as more dodgy? At 1 year old, my golf had 26k on it - In April, I reckon it'll have 72k.

If it is a year old then make sure it's been serviced if required so the warranty is OK. Some are on variable servicing and some are on fixed 12 mth intervals.

It's unlikley to have been a demonstrator with such low mileage.

Could another VW dealer look up the car's history to see if it's had warranty work?

I'd be most concerned about being conned than the car itself - is the car registered in the name and address of the person selling it etc? Remember for HPI protection you have to do the deal at the registered address.

AA check would cover the hpi and ownership stuff though wouldn't it?

Only issue is if the owner has done 20k miles on the motorway and then had the milage adjusted before taking it for its service. No one would do that would they scratchchin

Wuite possible that it was a pre reg and then just not done that many miles.

Call the seller and ask the question, ask when he bought it etc and go from there

Have you done an HPI? I'd be worried its damaged repaired, i.e. he bought it to repair, hence the low mileage and 2 owners.

Having spoken to the seller a couple of times and reading about cloned cars I've decided to steer clear. Couple of things have rung alarm bells - 1 - he was not clear about the circumstances in which he bought it from the previous owner, who apparently is from Preston. 2 - his English was so bad I could barely understand him and I just can't picture someone like that owning a mint 2011 top spec Golf and claiming he'd lost his job and was selling to open an off licence. 3 - the car really is priced too low for the age and mileage.
As I type this out I realise even more how dodgy it all sounds.
I'll post a link to it for you all to see.

What would that suggest? I spoke to VW who told me the car was sold to Mobility but they'd not seen it since. Right off??
I mean - write off!! Damn this bad spelling is contagious!
