Hello,

A 'change in circumstances' leads to a new what car (thread, not car) and a request to all those out there who have owned one of the above for help.

I live in central London, currently drive around in a A3 diesel. Exciting stuff. Previously I have had a TVR Chim 5 litre, various Land Rovers (Disco/Defender) an various modern Mercs.

I am looking for something fun for weekends away/trips to Europe. I don’t use a car for work but do occasionally drive to the North East (M1, straight up). I did love the Chim but there was always something wrong with it and they do not like being kept outside. During the winter I can however store the car indoors in the North East.

The Merc appeals for general waft but I feel I might be too young for one whilst the Porsche is one of those cars I have always liked but feel a drop top does it a bit of a disservice dynamics wise. I also feel I would lust after a 993 but they are rather expensive these days...

So, you have £16,000 - £18,000, like to have the roof down and are looking for something to go around Europe in, what would you propose? Total miles per year would be say 6K.

If there is something sensible that I am missing, other proposals would be welcome. I like cars with character and that are a little different, fuel economy and insurance are not a worry and neither is less than 4 seats.

Thanks to all the PH beards in advance!

Tivs of that generation tend to be fine after having chased out the odd gremlin and kept maintenance up to date, as long as they get driven regularly.

I would advise a 450 rather than a 500 though - nicer to drive and a more robust engine. 430s are even nicer, but getting rather old by now. Great if you can afford it to be a rolling 'project'. smile

[edit] whoops, Griff - in that case you're stuck with the 500 unless you go for a pre-cat...
