Doing NY and Washington in Apr-May this year.
Between the two is the New Jersey Shore and a place called Wildwood which sells itself as 50s USA. It looks quite good, but wondered if anyone had any experience of the place?

Also - it looks like it may not be open much (other than weekends) when we're there. Don't want to visit a Ghost-town! Again, anyone any knowledge to impart?

Thanks in advance,
Shentodj

Can't help much - except to say that I have spent about 18 months in NJ, and until your post, I'd never heard of the place.

if it's anything like the other NJ shore towns, for instance Ocean City just up the road, it'll be a long board walk with a load of amusements on the seafront. I unfortunately had to spend a lot of time in NJ a few years back, never made it to Wildwood but the Jersey shore wasn't my idea of fun, apart from spotting people with really bad hair smile Once you get off the seafront it usually just looks like any other bit of US suburbia.
I'd say spend an extra day in NY, unless you're passing through and fancy an ice cream.

I have been there and would not bother unless there is a special event planned that weekend. Summer usually begins on the NJ shore at Memorial Day (May 28). Prior to that most towns on the NJ shore are pretty quiet and unlikely to have everything open. Wilwood opens a little earlier (early May) but April is likely to be very slow. Their website is:

Not sure I would have described Wildwood as midway between NYC and DC when you are driving? It is a long way east of the I-95 corridor and heading back over the state routes towards the NJ Turnpike/I-95 is pretty slow.

Then again I am not a fan of the TV show Jersey Shore which will get you ready for what you will see!
