Hi all,
A mate and I have the same problem with our cats. The emissions light has been on for a few months. Steve at JZM has assured us theres no issue, the cars are primarily trackdays cars so apparently the exhausts run hotter/longer than usual.
So its great that’s there no problem but the lights still on so what happens when it comes to MOT time.
Some options we’re considering include:
a) bribe local mot guy, that’s doable but what happens when it comes time to sell the car?
b) replace the cats, quote is £1500, I’d rather just take the emissions light out of the dash!
c) race cats (100 cell, 200 cell). But the car s just scrape in to 105db days so this will put it over the top. Would probably have to get a janspeed muffler to add onto the exhaust ends for trackdays but this is not that desirable
d) any other thoughts?
Many thanks,
BJ

I am guessing we will still fail the emissons test, but I am sure we can get around that.
BJ another point, the reason we are so close on the noise limits I think is because our cats aren't in great shape so our cars may be getting louder, so would one of the after market exhausts actually be louder than what we have now? Just a thought

Gibbo - yep lights have been cleared previously but generally come back on after a trackday
Dave - 100/200 cell cats will def be louder than std cats. But yep I suppose a repack of the cats (cost?) and then clearing the lights is worth a crack. A repack will also reduce the noise as you suggest.

Get a cheap OBDII reader that clears codes, I got 1 of these and works a treat:

Guys, not sure if we spoke a year or so ago on here.
I have a set of mk1 cats.
They have done 8k miles and been dry stored in the garage since about say 2001.
Someone on here did offer to buy them from me but basically wanted me to guarantee they would work or return his money when put on the car at some point in the future.
If you recon as he did they are £1500+ then £500 sounds fair to me and I will return your money within say a month if they dont work, I trust you to be honest.
Please pm me if interested.

Hi, i almost bought the cats from you. Decided on a full cargraphic system! You can probably reprogram the ecu to obd2 rather than obd4 like it is. It should ignore the rear lambda sensor and keep the light out.
You need to know when that light on that it is the cats and not something more serious.
How old are the GT3 cars 2003 onwards? If so I would try and reprogram ecu with Porsche tester to EU2 not EU4.

Mike, How easy is it to get this done, as I have had the same issue? Would a good indie be able to reprogram it? I'm based in the South East......You need to know when that light on that it is the cats and not something more serious.

Yes, you just need the engine control unit programming code available through ipas from a dealer. The indy should be able to get the codes. It will put the control unit back to factory standard but not take any notice of the rear sensors in the exhaust.
Get the codes read and if they are catalytic converter efficiency faults then the cats are worn and the gas is bypassing the monolith and triggering the check light. Get the MOT centre to see if it will still pass as they may be shot! If they say all is good and it will pass. Get the control unit reprogrammed and it should in theory ignore the rear sensors as it removes any way to even monitor the sesnors with a porsche system tester.
Wish I had done this to mine to test my theory. The earlier gt3 models did not have the second set of sensors in the exhaust system so when you reprogram it disables this part of the software. It is only to check the efficiency of the cats for emissions.

Thats very interesting, thanks for the info. Had mine recently serviced by Parr including an MOT which it had no problems passing. Parr confirmed the fault code was for the second (exit) cat. They cleared the fault off but it popped up again the other day. Like you mentioned in an earlier post, it's not the sort of thing you want to ignore in case it is something more serious! It will put the control unit back to factory standard but not take any notice of the rear sensors in the exhaust.

Hi mike, yes I know it was you, I was out of work at the time and the cash would have been usefull but was unsure going forward what my employment situation would be by the time you fitted and didn't want to be hit with trying to find £500 at short notice. You need to know when that light on that it is the cats and not something more serious.

I still have a set of standard manifolds as well and an air box and standard clutch and flywheel in the garage will suit you a treat as spares :-)

!All,
Thanks for the replies to this (and apologies for the delay in getting back on here but I had a nightmare week last week).
Rightyho so I was getting excited about this reprogramming the ecu (to obd2 not obd4) fix to ignore the rear lambda sensor. But then I see that Stroller got Parr to do this and it only worked temporarily.
Am I understaning this correctly in that solution should still work but either:
i) Stroller's cats are shot (like mine and Daves I suspect) so the light went back on, or
ii) Parr reprogrammed to obd4 rather than obd2 (whatever they are)
Stroller, can you ask Parr re the above? (Ps where abouts in the sth east are you?)
Dave, I suspect our cats are shot mate as both cars have done approx 25k miles and are used a lot on track.
Dave/Stroller et al,
Some other solutions I've managed to dig up from other threads:
e) Ade: (Keep it Lit) "aftermarket 200 cell sports cats can be bought for about £200 each, you need two on a gt3 & half a days labour to fit at your or my local custom exhaust joint."
- I'm still worried about the noise increase with these
f) DiscoColin: "..repacking.. sent mine to Europipe in Belgium for that. They are also welded in rather than crimped that the OE ones are, so more robust as well as cheaper than factory parts. Fitted they are still a fair chunk of change for something that failed after roughly 25k miles though."
- might have to do this in the end, I will email Europipe to get a quote. But we'll need to add labour costs re removing and refitting.
Cheers,
BJ
