Female friend has got into a habit of drinking too much over the last year or so and now realises this so wants to get back to being able to have a few beers/glass of wine a few times a week....i.e drink normally.

She is mid 30's, married, works (from home) couple of kids, etc, etc and on the surface seems fine. She certainly isnt passing out in the streets! In fact, aside from not being able to drive (because she'd be over the limit) the impact is pretty negligible.....but she's having at least 4 bottles of beer (300ml) a day, never goes a day without and more often its 5 or 6 and could easily be 10-15 on a bad day.

Having got to the point where she needs a beer within a couple of hours of waking (normally has one instead of breakfast) she doesnt think she could go cold turkey so plans to stick to 4 for a few months (which would be a huge reduction on an average month) and then go to 3, 2, etc, etc.

Never having been addicted to anything this strikes me as being like ripping off a plaster in super slow mo!

Any tips/advice? On any of this.....from whether 6 beers a day for a 10st female is as nuts as it strikes me, to how best to get "off".

Bud

(My involvement is that we work together on occasion and have know her since school.....so friendly/commercial interest only in her being healthy......before the "pictures" type posts start!)

That's not a lot of alcohol. If it was bottles of wine in a day there would be an issue, but I think the only problem she'll have is with getting to sleep in the evening. Tell her to MTFU, or WTFU as appropriate. wink

1.2 - 1.8 litres of beer seems a lot to me for a female. Having said that I can't really hold my drink so perhaps I'm being biased.

Part of the problem is that this base of 4 bottles (which is the lowest it ever goes) is not much. She could easily have that by lunch and then not have anything else all day (assuming no stress which often is a cause of having more) So she functions fine and while she knows it's not good it's not causing a big enough issue in her life to get her to WTFU!

If she was waking in a gutter it may help move the process along!

Withdrawal can be dangerous for alcoholics - risk of seizures. Whether she would fall into that category, I don't know, but she should probably speak to her GP.

Go to GP get a weeks worth of Librium (works on the same brain receptors as alcohol)then stop, staggered reduction is total bks IMHO ( I know from personal experience). If she is having a cheeky can of beer while watching Jeremy Kyle first thing in the morning, she is up st street.

Needing a drink in the morning is bad news, imho.

I can happily neck a bottle of wine (and more) in a night, but even I draw the line at beer for breakfast.

She should see her GP for a referral for alcohol counselling.

What the Chicane said.

Nothing before 6pm means you're OK, so far as I am concerned, if you don't ever feel rough next morning.

Done.
