I've noticed a clicking sound coming from the front end of my Specialized Tarmac Expert. I can't quite work out if it is from the wheel, axle or headset. It only started at the weekend but sounds like a stone embedded in the tyre as it's a fairly regular 'click' that does increase with revolutions.

It goes away briefly then returns so I think it could be connected with the amount of weight I am putting on the front. I've got a cat eye computer on the stem and a magnet on the spoke with a wireless sensor on the fork but these don't seem related to the sound.

The only thing I did differently was take the front wheel off, which I have since adjusted numerous times and it doesn't make a difference to the clicking. I can't find anything embedded in the wheel but what could it be?

If you've been out in the wet it will have a lot of salt mixed in and you need to check your bearings regularly.

it's been out in the damp but never soaking wet weather. What's the best way to do this?

Either lift the front wheel or turn the bike upside down and spin the wheels. If the clicking continues it's probably that. Strip and clean out the hubs and relubricate when you put the lot back together.

I've booked it into the bike shop for a check.

You've checked the tyres and there's no clicking whilst not under load. Lose reflector?

reflector delete option

Maybe spokes or headset but it only occurs when the bike is under load and moving.

If the wheel has been ballanced properly with the reflector then it could be off now?

do you have any spokes that feel loose? is the wheel true?

slight buckle causing the rim to scrape the brake pads maybe? having more weight over the front could increase this buckle slightly, which is why you only hear it when you have weight over the wheel.

assuming your bike has rim brakes that is..
