Lights switch confusion!

My Lucas headlight switch is confusing me. Looking at the owners manual for the S2 Vixen it doesn't show a seperate switch for sidelights and I had always assumed the headlight switch should be a three position switch (off/on/on). My switch (below) only has two positions. I don't think it is broken although a possible explanation. Surely the sides lights should logically be the middle position in a three position switch?

Ah ha....the lighting switch on the Vixen is for powering the lighting curcuit.

The sidelamp/dipped headlamp/main beam is taken care of by the switch on the right side of the column.
