I myself was interested in getting an NB mk2.5, if you look at the "Buying an mx5: what do i need to know?" thread i started some helpful people gave me some good as vice with regards to the NB. It seems tthe biggest think to look out for is the start of rust on the inside of the sills and engine bay. No one mentioned anything about engine problems or mechanical problems. Also i think theres a link somewhere in the thread explaining what editions had what features and extras. Hope this is of any help. smile

While you're checking for rust, have a look at the rear wheel arches too.

Ah yes i forgot to mention that. I think the best 2.5 personally is the euphonic as it came with nice alloys, red and black leather interior and heated seats. Just looks really nice to me.

i had a 2.5 last year. 2001 102K miles, FSH.

The car was ROTTEN. All four wheel arches were rotting from the inside out, and the sills were rotting too.

Rot is definitely their biggest problem.

In contrast i've just bought an 89 mk 1 and theres pretty much no rust on it and its 12 years older!

Oh - check the rear brakes / calipers. Mine were seized and the discs scrap.

Rot isn't their biggest problem, owners are. A lack of maintenance will kill them. If the drain tubes are blocked water will flood over the wheel arches into the sills. Keep them clear and it shouldn't be a problem. My 2001 Sport is completely rust free apart from a bit of normal surface rust on the wishbones.
Rear brakes are a problem on all MX5s.

Indeed. I can't understand why every owner doesn't do the basic thing of keeping the drains clear and using Dinitrol every couple of years. Problem solved. Even keeps the wishbones nice and clean.

So tin worm seems to be the biggest issue then smile, i shall take a little torch to get a good look in all the areas highlighted.

I shall go with my eyes open. There's no immediate need for an MX-5, so anything dodgy and it's walk away time.

Cheers chaps

Dont know whereabouts in the UK you are but there is a very nice one in Southampton for sale on MX5Nutz

I was going to go for it myself but have since learnt the Elise seats in it are fixed which is no good for me as I would want the OH to be able to buy it

Buy some runners and fit the Elise seat to them. Simples.

You can do this??

I do love this car or the look of it havent seen it in the flesh yet, to travel from London to Southampton I would have to be pretty committed to buy so have asked seller for more pics but it seems pretty sorted to me

NS - forget what I said, it looks like a PoS you don't want it wink

For those interested, I have a link somewhere to a useful product - adding top harness slots to Elise seats allowing proper fitment and use of a harness.

The harness holes work well on S1 seats but not so good on S2 as the shoulder/headrest is a different shape and either way for someone taller they would be useless as the holes would be too low down (i.e. my shoulders are already above the tops of the "shoulders" of the seats).

I have the same problem. I can squeeze into most seats, but the harness holes are always too low.

Still, the majority of people will find these suitable, if theyre thinking about Elise seats - certainly better than trying to route them around the headrest...
