Well, the Porsche has gone...
Discussion
Following on from the imaginatively titled thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=10... and the original readers car thread www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&t=10... I'm afraid to report I yet again have a Porsche shaped hole in the garage. The new owner came to pick the SC up this afternoon, great bloke & definatly the right guy to look after it
As a few folk know from my posts I didn't really get on with the car, what with it being a classic & everything (albeit a bloody fast one!). It's a shame we didn't get to do a summer with it, it would've been great to do the euro tour & the summer shows with it but trackdays are really my thing so I decided to move it on.
I keep looking at 968s as a good compromise for what I like but in all honesty, it's probably going to be a move away from the marque for me. It's a damn shame in fact, but that's modern pork for you. I fell in love with the cayman R Porsche gave me to use while they displayed mine for the 991 launch & I simply adore boxster spyders, but, & I feel a bit lame for saying it I just don't trust the m9X type engines.
In reality 911p's old mans 996c2 should really be the type of car I should be looking at but I just can't be bothered with all the little things (& big things) that can go wrong, sad eh?
Of course there's the gt3 but without ruffling too many feathers as nice as they are the build quality just isn't there, neither truth be told is the general 996 design (& I'm not talking funny headlamps!) IMHO. Not when I need to spend that much money anyway.
Plus, as stated in a few posts life's changed (for the better I might add) a bit since last summers marathon car search & I'm not wanting to sink all that money in a toy, there's just not that much for the guy who wants to spend say 15k on a modern Porsche (& who can't be arsed with a succession of rads, rms, ims, d-chunks, scored bores etc etc etc).
Shame really as all the framed Porsche Motorsport posters will look a bit daft next to an M car in the garage. Looking at a couple of Z4M coupes this week, so it's not exactly a hardship!
Give it a few years & I can see myself in another 993 maybe, possibly a dfi spyder or caymanR when they come down a bit, it'll be interesting to see if they've finally solved the inherent design flaws in the original engines.
No real point to this post I guess , just wondering out loud, I'll still be posting in here as I like the craic (even if it is to just take the mick out of the depreciation boys) but feel free to give me the old "come back when you own one" comment if you disagree with owt i say

sorry but b
ksThe 996 is generally very reliable. More so than a 993. We know that they are more likely to suffer a major failure but it's not a great headache when they are so cheap and the Hartech scheme available to us all. They can be very good value motoring and are a lot of fun to drive. My only problem with my car is that I'm getting a complex about everyone saying how bad it is!
I just couldn't justify spending £28K on a '06 model year 997 cab with 50,000 miles when I could buy (and did) a '98 996 cab and had a Gold Major, rads, clutch and thermostat for half the money on a car with fewer miles. I am right...

Why is is it more costly to run a 993 on the Hartech scheme then? Tell me.
The low prices for 996s is due to the very considerable numbers relative to the 993, the occasional serious failure which Porsche has been very bad about, and the fact that 996s are plasticy and not air cooled. I can see why people want 993s, I like them, they're not more reliable though. Baz, support me on this...

Its due to the sourcing of special high quality parts that are made out of precious metals, such as Kryptonite and Dragonscale. The door hinge lubricant is made from clarified angel tears. They get your stuff from the Halfords value range.

Admit it Craig, you just can't get on with the engine being in the 'wrong' place hence why the 993 didn't go on track (IIRC) and why the SC wouldn't have done either.

just use me cars for gentle sunday drives mate

but by the same respect that means i'm allowed mine. a 996 gt3 is still a 996, & i'm sorry but since when did radiators & condensers become consumables? & that's not the half of it, 'cos if we're just talking generic 996 issues i won't open up the firewall argument again, seems everyone's forgotten that one & let's not get in to superglued coolent hoses, leaking crank cases & stretchy cam chains

i'm not daft enough to think that only water cooled 911s are alone in suffering design flaws, but you've got to admit, as good as they are on track it's not all sweetness & light.
they're lovely bits of kit, but i sometimes think you pay £35k for the crank & con rods & get the rest of it for free. i know i know, i'm talking s
te but you get my drift
