HMRC PAYE Calculator accurate?
Discussion
Is the PAYE calculator on the HMRC site accurate?
Doing my first Tax return on-line and HMRC suggests that i owe double what the PAYE calculator comes up with as additional tax from 2010-11.
I'm straight forward PAYE, so just a case of entering my wage details. feel a bit bruised as i wasn't expecting to owe anything from 2010-11, let alone the amount HMRC want

Are you only on one wage? I don't see why you would need to do a tax return in that situation - did they tell you to do one?
I only have one wage, but there are certain other criteria that qualify you to complete a tax return. It looks like my employer (large company) has not paid enough tax for me, but i only make it half what HMRC suggest i owe.ETA: yes, HMRC told me to complete a tax return and only last week!

Welcome to the club. My employer didn't deduct enough tax for me so when I came to complete my tax return I got hit with an unexpected, and large, bill. To start with I thought it was a mistake but after speaking to several people at the tax office it turned out my company didn't register that I went into the 50% tax bracket. I spent a few weeks in denial but ended up sucking it all up.

Have you entered the details into http://listentotaxman.com/ ? That site is pretty accurate.
Thanks. When i enter my details there, it also matches the HMRC calculated output, which is still half what the tax man says i owe. So... i accept that i'm owing tax, my company has messed up (I'm not in the 50% tax bracket), but according to my on-line self-assessment, i'm due double that amount and i'm not talking about hundreds either

I Can't see how i've messed up on-line either, as all i have to do is enter my 'Pay' and 'Tax Paid' from my P60, even i can't get that wrong!
I guess i'll just have to pay-up by the 31st and then try and get some feedback from HMRC...

I am having the same problem - my company messed up the fact that your personal allowance also goes to zero after a certain band, so I owe more tax.

With electeronic submission of a tax return, a tax refund takes less than a fortnight, in my experience.
Not always. I submitted electronically, my refund took six months - just in time for the next tax payment, oddly enough. I was passed from pillar to post and heard the "it has to be approved by a different department" excuse many times over.SGirl said:

But by and large they are very quick these days.

Bingo! I didn't even know about this.Just had a debate with HR... if tax is automatically calculated when the thresholds are exceeded, why not the same when you exceed the level set for losing your personal allowance. Standard response is 'it's up to the individual to manage their own tax affairs', fairy muff.
Just paid what i owe, at least the whole on-line thing was painless.
Thanks for the feedback folks, PH:Tax matters.
