Quick question for PH as I'm hoping to confirm my order spec today biggrin

Can anyone tell me how good/ bad/ awful the standard sound system that you get with nav is? I like my music but am by no means an audiophile and most of the stuff I listen to isn't overly bassy. To give you some context I have the business system in the Z4 which is more than adequate for me!

Thanks!

If at all possible, upgrade to at least Hifi or the Professional option. Much better sound, and your resale will be much easier.

Base is awful. I disliked Hifi (had it in my 1st M3, and tried all manner of things to make it sound better) - harsh and gutless - I would only buy a car with professional or individual.. As I then did!

Just head over to M3Cutters to read the numerous threads on how confusing this topic is on the E9X M3 due to BMW changing the name of their sound systems over the last few years. I believe there are four stages of sound systems which have differing names.

1) Base sound system - I believe this sounds terrible.
2) Loudspeaker System - BMW Professional - This is (I think) just a speaker upgrade which takes you from base 6 speaker system to a 10 speaker system.
3) Logic 7 - This is where they switch from analogue to digital and is considered a very good system. I think its also know as a Harmon Kardon system.
4) Individual System - The mutts nuts!!

Thats how I understand the BMW sound systems line up...if I'm wrong then no doubt somebody will be along shortly to clear up any misunderstanding. I think the Logic 7 is the system that causes the most confusion as thats the system they appear to have renamed over the years.

Almost right, the names are slightly different..

1) Base - poor
2) Loudspeaker system Business - essential starting point, if only for the subs under the front seats (ideal for OP's needs)
3) Loudspeaker system Professional / Logic 7 / Harmon Kardon (in my expereice, only slight better than Business)
4) Individual - suberb.

I'll put my anorak away now......

I have Professional in my M3 saloon - it's OK, but if I were speccing a new car and planning to keep for a couple of years, I would definitely upgrade to the Logic 7 as a minimum and probably to the Individual system.

Thanks for the replies guys

I'm going with the Business system having looked at what it actually has vs the base one - the dealer tells me it's a 205W digital amp with 12 speakers vs 4 channel amp with 6 speakers

Not concerned about re-sale as the car will be contract hired boxedin

Nice thread here, thanks everyone! Sorry but I am still not quite sure so can I just check again here:

Base = what you get if no mention of upgrades in an advert is made
Business = first upgrade (love to know what it 'has')
Professional = next upgrade (how much more do you get?)
Logic 7 = Harmon Kardon which is different in some way to professional? (or is it?)
Individual is a the top spec (this one I understand) smile

My 'next car options' include a 2009/10 M3 (all the new electronic and s/w updates I hope by that MY) but I keep looking for the HiFi level/blue tooth and a few others bits as must-haves. Few cars seem to have logic7 where as many have professional. If they are one and the same this makes my search a lot easier (come 2013).

Cheers

All the same, as in mid level between Business and Individual. Only 1 is available at any one time.

DSP Pro, Professional, Logic 7, Harmon Kardon.
