Hi folks

I think I will be giving up on my idea of staying in Val D'Isere for a night on my summer trip. So looking at alternatives has anyone been to Albertville in summer?

If so I am all ears

Or an alternative town maybe in the same area? Need a hotel close to/in centre, with parking and short walkable to bars/restaurants

I definitely wouldn`t stay in Albertville, I havn`t seen anything nice about it!

If I were you I would go to Chamonix then drive to Briancon via either Col de Petit St Bernard if it`s open then Iseran if it`s open or go Chamonix to Briancon via Megeve, Albertville then Galibier.

Albertville isn't a bad little place (the main street is not visible from the bit most Brits will drive along) and it has a nice hotel in the centre called the Hotel Million. The town of Conflans on the opposite bank of the river is also pretty, but Albertville/Conflans is a small place, so as somewhere to get your head down and go for a little wander it's fine, as a place to explore for half a day, it's not.

I would think about spending more time in Annecy, or visiting Chamonix and taking a trip up the Aiguille du Midi (via cablecar).

Pralognan is a pretty ski resort which is very active in summer, but I believe you mentioned your other half has mobility problems (?) if so, Pralognan, which is a great place for climbing/mountain-walking etc, wouldn't suit

Hi Graham.
We stayed in Bourg Saint Maurice which was a good 1/2 way point between Annecy and Briancon. Absolutely cracking road just south of Ugine D67 that leads to D925 which passes through Beaufort then onto Bourg St. M. There's a lovely mountain lake (Lac de Roselend) on the way that's worth a stop and look. Then you can go through Tignes, Val D'Isere and Bonneval-Sur-Arc (that I mentioned on the last thread) on the Route Des Grandes Alpes (D902) then turn right at Lanslevillard and go just into Italy then onto Braincon. Honestly, that Route Des Grandes Alpes road is amazing - twisty, tunnels great views etc. Great day long drive between Bourg and Briancon.
Cheers,
Jon
(edited to add - we spent more time in Annecy on the morning and just used Bourg as an overnight stop and somewhere convenient to get a decent meal and good chalet style hotel).

Thanks folks - I will do some research

Re: Route des Grand Alpes - I have built in some great driving after Castellane - Col de Bonnette and then loads more R des G A after as we make our way to Val/Albertville/new destination and then after, as we head up to Annecy.

Looking forward to it...just worried that the portable speed limiting device sat next to me might have kittens with some of the drops eek

The road from Briancon to the right turn for Galibier is awesome and will be sweeping uphill curves for you if going S to N rather than hairpin stuff!

Just so you're aware, most of Bourg is on a slope and it is about the same size as Albertville.

I go to "albertville" with the dog every weekend as there is a nice big lake there. We call it Albert Village though and its next to where i live in Swadlincote, Derbyshire.

Not a close walk to anywhere, but worth it for the view alone.

Nice drive up there too . . .

Thanks all

After research and failure to find a suitable hotel (to suit us that is) we have decided to have a longer travel day but stay for a 3rd night in Annecy.

Once again thanks thumbup
