HELP! engine problem with a vauxhall corsa 1.2
Discussion
hi
can anyone give me any advise on the following problem? it would be much appreciated
about a month or so ago i was driving on the motorway at 70 and the engine light suddenly appeared on the dashboard and the car started to slow down even though my foot was hard on the accelerator - i managed to get over to the hard shoulder and called the AA who advised it was most likely a problem with the coil pack to the engine - i managed to drive home (going at 40 mph, any faster the car would have started to cut out and slow down again), after a few days of leaving the car outside home i found the car wouldnt start at all when i wanted to use it to drive it to the garage - i got it to the garage (being towed thankfully) who spent soooo much time sourcing the problem - i was told it first it was the coil pack, as well as the crank sensor, these were both repaired however the car was still mis firing once it got to 50 mph - i was later told it was a problem with the ignition, that it needed an UC upgrade, i got this installed however after 2 weeks the problem re occured, since then the garage have been trying to source the problem and after much chasing they tell me i might have a problem with the two engine cams - the garage give me a cost of approx £600 to repair however cannot guarantee the cams will work :s??? apparently because misfiring on a corsa can be caused by numerous things...is this correct? i really do not want to pay this much money (when i have paid so much already) if the car is going to have this problem again within days/weeks/months!
i do not know much about cars so a response would be greatly appreciated to the above - if any one can give me a response or a solution to my problem, pls bear in the mind i have also had the timber chain replaced about 3-4 months ago when the car started to rattle
thanks

I'm by no means a mechanic, but could it be aproblem with the fuel filter? If it's nackered, it could be letting crap in from the tank and causing the misfire and when the engine is being loaded therefore requiring more fuel, the crap is coming through faster and making the issue worse?
As above, I'm definitely no mechanic, so may be totally wrong!!

Another one of my 'expert' opinions may be the spark plugs. If they're slightly corroded or wearing out, could that be causing this too?
Jonboy- no offence but the car requires diagnosis, not parts throwing at it. Spark plugs/HT leads breaking down usually manifest themselves first as a high load misfire i.e. labouring in a high gear.Judging by what we've heard the car has been maintained, sp presumably the plugs aren't 30k old.
Just a thought, but get them to check the camshafts, only takes 10 minutes to lift the rocker cover and these engines are prone for snapping cams.
The cap bolts should be done to 8NM. Check them all for tightness.
The Mrs' exhaust camshaft snapped between cylinders 2 & 3. Was very similar symptoms and could [believe it or not] still be driven.

ETA2: Should read through things more thoroughly. If they've checked the cams already they'd have noticed if they were snapped or not.

Hi being a ex vauxhall tech I might be able to help.
These engines were pretty reliable apart from the timing chain issue and the coil packs failing on them, now it does sound like there has been a bit of diagnostic done already on the car but my first port of call would be to check the timing hasnt slipped, these engines do not use woodruff keys on the cams or crank and if not done up to the correct torque after a while these can slip. Vauxhall have special tools that go into the end of the cams to lock them and a large pin that goes intot he block to lock the crank.
Doing this would only take about half an hour to check but just a bit of a coincidence that the chain was done 3-4 months ago, once this is done and verified a quick compression test would be good if the timing has slipped.
Let me know how you get on
