On my way home today I was making progress down a fairly deserted dual carriage way until I was stifled by a bloke in an avensis estate, nothing in front of him but he was hogging the outside lane.

I sat behind him for a while thinking that he hadn't seen me and would move over, then all of a sudden I got the full force of his washer jets and his brake pedal at the same time rolleyes

Luckily I was far enough back to swerve into the inside lane, as I shot past him I then got his horn and the coffee beans, no idea why confused

Jeez I was only trying to get past! What is wrong with these people? Why do they do it?

Gonna get flamed for this but life's too short.

Tw-t stationary in outside lane and inside lane free? Just undertake making your move to the inside nice and early.

Self appointed upholders of the "law as they see it", ignorant of their own deficiencies and can't see the aggression in their own driving since it doesn't involve tailgating or speeding.

No excuse for brake testing, ever.

If he brake tested you and you had to swerve you were too close surely?

Brake testing is a nobbish thing to do but I'd be amazed if stupid drivers ever do it to people who are driving at the recommended distance behind them, because they wouldn;t feel threatened/harassed if you were a safe distance behind.

Devil's advocate and all that but I'd hazard a guess that you were being a pushy sod, just because he was driving like a tit and blocking the lane doesn't make it right for you to drive like a tit and sit 6 foot off his bumper smile

To be fair, there's no excuse for tailgating either.

Much merit in that, but can be a difficult call to make. I encountered a situation the other week with a car in the outside lane of a dual carriageway at ~40mph. The body language of the car looked uncertain so I was reluctant to run up the inside for fear of them pulling across on me, but a flash of headlights had no response. I was then faced with cars coming up behind and overtaking on the inside of me at 80+ which felt very uncomfortable.

I hesitated and it put me in a worse position. In hindsight, on that occasion I should have done the same.

I don't think the driver of the car in question had any idea that what they were doing was wrong.

I'll undertake on a three-lane dual carriageway (with a lane's space). I don't think I'd do it on a two-lane one though. I'd just stop at some services for a coffee or something. smile

The most terrifying thing I've seen on the road bar none was 6 or 7 years ago on the North Circular, dual carriageway section, 50 limit. Old guy was sat in the outside lane doing about 40, clearly out of his depth. Most people were giving him a wide berth. Classic barried chav e30 with huge wheels with the worst camber I have ever seen - must have been a 10 degree lean on the rear wheels flew up behind him, and was all over his arse at a distance of a foot or two for a few hundred yards, on the horn and flashing the lights. I dropped way back seeing a major accident in the making.

e30 saw a gap, undertook at speed almost clipping the car, swung straigh back out again and lock the brakes solid, smoke pouring off the tyres. I have no idea to this day how the old guy avoided him. He came off the brakes and then did the same thing again, then fked off into the distance. Unbelievable.

Getting closer towards the car infront makes them more aware of you presence and that perhaps you wish to overtake. In germany they use a simple flash of the headlights to indicate that they would like to get past, but here it is condsidered as rude as if you pissed on their children. If you just waited behind them at the correct distance odds are he wouldn't think that you wanted to get past and stay there.

I sit fairly back, flash the lights a couple of times and briefly indicate left, normally leads to lane hoggers pulling over. I won't tailgate.

If you had to swerve around him you were clearly too close. There is no way you had time to make sufficient observation to safely indicate and change lane if you were caught by surprise.

I'm quite surprised his washers reached you then? It's takes damned powerful washers to keep the water in the air for two seconds! Possible I suppose though, with those atomising ones.

I'm not sure these people are intelligent/co-ordinated enough to do this on purpose. I think it's a brainfart that happens when they brake in an indignant panic. Like the thing that happens when you OT them, they look sideways and their foot goes down.
