Great car. But no RHD xDrive?

Why bother at all then? So much effort.

The car will not cost anything and will do infinite miles to the gallon. It is very simple - it would not be on sale in the UK. BMW will not make the 550 dag-dag without the x-drive. The x-drive will not be re-engineered to fit into the 5-series platform in RHD form on costs grounds.

Happy days for me, last thing I need is another moron telling me he drives a diesel, "but an M-sport one" and to ask me what is the point of my E61 M5, when a mapped 535d is quicker. I for once am rejoicing at the lack of a 550d for the UK market.

It is coming to the UK in 2 wheel drive form. .1 of a sec slower to 60 than the F10 M5 they say....and thats before a remap. hehe

As did I... our very own PH agrees:

PH said:
But BMW UK is clearly beholden to the ideal that its saloon models must always be rear-wheel drive and that introducing a standalone four-wheel-drive mega-diesel 5 into the mix would mess with our heads. It was also suggested putting 546lb ft of torque through the rear wheels only would be too much for the drivetrain, let alone drivers.

I want a 550dx Touring ... Not to pretend its an M5. Just because it would tick a lot of boxes for me.

Doing about 2500 miles per month, the abysmal range of around 200 miles would be somewhat annoying.

Had the E92 M3 for a while, and had to fill up 2-3 times per week (every 240-280 miles), although driving it made up for that annoyance.

Yikes! Yeah, the range is not that great. If I drive at around 70/75mph on the Motorway I get 300 miles out of a tank. The minute I go over 3000rpm where the fun starts, consumption gets silly. I only do 10k per year so it is Ok, but I would not run an M5 with your kind of mileage per month. To be fair, a 530d would probably fit your requirements just as well, no?

A 320D/520D would meet the minimum requirements - but surely thats not all there is to it.

Maybe I am being slightly uncharitable at the minute as I miss my M3 too much, but in the 530D overtake are still relatively effortless and quick - but it's more like an office worker asked to start a job at 4.30pm when doing it, compared the M3 (and I hope the M5) being like a screaming maniac asked to do what she likes best. The 530D does what is needed with no fuss, no emotion ... The M3 would do it with in a way that makes you smile and want to keep going just as hard after the overtake is done. The 530D is far more refined than I expected a diesel to be, but the vibration through the pedals, etc while not unpleasant, is not something that urges you to really drive it. The M3 had this deep, reassuring thrum through the pedals that wants to make you rev it just to feel/hear what it does.

In my mind, the 550XD would give me a few extras while losing the fun factor (not too much hopefully) - It would still be near mentally fast, economical (to an extent) and give me 4WD (might not be of much benefit, just something cool that I feel like having).
