When I'm changing gear sometimes its not very smooth. It can be hard to get it out of gear sometimes and sometimes doesn't want to go in first time. It doesn't crunch though. Could this possibly be solved by changing the oil in the gearbox? (98' 450)

I also have a slight issue with it being difficult to get it OUT of gear, although it always goes INTO gears perfectly easily. It's particularly reluctant to let go of third gear sometimes.

I've discovered that the problem goes away if you give a slight push on the gear stick INTO the gear it's already in before moving it into the gear you want to change to. It doesn't have to be a big push; just a slight pressure will do - and it only takes a split second. It's become "muscle memory" for me now.

I had this problem too. After I changed the gearbox oil it got a bit better. Then I lubricated the joints in the gearbox remote control and it made a massive difference! I don't really understand why actually - but it's a dead easy job. Undo four screws and lift off the centre console and there they are.

Worth checking the clutch fluid too of course.

New oil will probably help, but more likely master or slave cylinder on the way out.

How easy is it to change the oil? Ive read it's a 2 man job involving some hose pipe? It's going for a service soon so I might just wait and get them to do it.

Its a pretty easy job if you can get under the car. Have a look on Youtube, i am sure Quinny who used to frequent this forum made a video on it.
