Just having a look at Scalextric on ebay (as you do!)and I see there is classic or sport track available with converters to go between the two. Obviously the sport is the new version, but what are the benefits over the original?

Not a lot of difference, the sport is MUCH easier to put together but then I'm betting enough of us on here have spent hours with the old stuff anyway so that probably cancels out that. (I'm guessing about 50% of the layers of skin on my thumb are from mine.

Some of the newer accessories will only connect to a sport piece but the rest of the track can be classic if you like.

That's about it.

I'd definately go sport as the options are unbelievable!!
I've just regressed into being a child 25 years after having my last set. Lots of things have changed!! Sport digital is unreal. The set I'm building at the moment is 85ft long, it has 9 lane change section, a 15ft straight with 4 lanes plus a pit lane. I think of it as a marathon rather than a sprint because otherwise you could spend a fortune!!

With all them pieces of "snapped" 4x2 underneath supporting the bridges, I presume it is a replica of the new Indian F1 track..?biggrin

When I say this thread I wondered if you'd post those pics Falkster.
So when's the debut race? Don't you be getting too much practice in smile

I bought a grabber from a mobility shop. It's not as bad as you think. There's a gap between the two chimney breasts where one 'racer' would be and I am thinking of cutting a hole on the back side but that's purely down to space for people to be because I've used a bit more of the space than I probably should have.

I'm as tight as a ducks bum, it can be done on a budget. Everything I've bought I've trawled eBay for and just collected it until I had enough. Cars start at £45 for a digital but I bought two Porsches for £20 delivered.
I think you can tell I'm tight, using wood for track supports!!! That doesn't matter because they'll be boxed in with some painted POS I from work.

Neil, I've hardly used it. I enjoy the building really!! Got loads to do before it's ready. My copper tape turned up this morning, I need a 20amp DC power supply plus a new power base. When you put 4-6 cars plus all the lane changers it really saps the power - it only supplies about 3 amps to the track as standard!!

Guess who my dad was engineering director for, a few years ago ? I swear I must have at least 250 scalextric cars at mums house. Including one that is the only one of it's kind in existence. A hand made Ferrari pre production model with a hand applied livery ie not tampo printed.

When dad used to go into work on saturday morning he would take me and leave me in the MASSIVE showroom that had a four lane scalextric track of the Brands Hatch GP circuit. It was great being a kid with a dad who worked for a toy company biggrin

Yep its what having a boy child is all about, 'dad can I play Scalextrics?', 'not today but on the weekend son'.

I would go for the sport stuff if your buying new/hardly used especially if you don't have somewhere to leave a permanent setup, that said I wouldn't mind some converters to add things like the hump back bridge and perhaps the Le Mans start.

My digital garage so far;
TVR400R
Porsche Boxster x 2
Ferrari 430
Lamborghini Gallardo

I just need to get the soldiering iron out to do the Ferrari 250GTO, Disneys Lightening McQueen and Francesco. £12 a pop for converters to do your none digital cars (unless they are pluggable in which case Argos had some silly cheap plugs online last time I looked).

They have a visitor centre there now. Dad now lives in Hong Kong and works for the supermarket where 'every little helps', but comes over 3 or 4 times a year for work and to see me and his family. We had a look round the visitor centre last summer and got taken into the factory, mostly just warehousing now as most of it is made in china.

Took me back to my childhood of standing next to mannesmann demag moulding machines as burning hot, freshly moulded scalextric track dropped out of the machines. The smell of the hot plastic I can sense now.

It starts as huge tubs of white pellets, with 1 in 50 black pellets that turns it all black as it melts together.

The jadlam amazon prices are very high but you can buy them off ebay or even just copy the plan and get the same set for a fraction. I used a basic jadlam plan and adjusted it where I had the space and mine has cost me £320 so for and their 80ft sets are over a grand.

Despite some sarcastic comments about Jadlam, they do actually offer real good customer service, Ive bought some stuff from them on their no reserve, free p+p auctions and grabbed some proper bargains yet they still arrive really quickly!!

Looks great but at £2,679.88 it's a bit yikes but at least the p&p is reasonable at £0.99 hehe

It wouldnt cost anywhere near that. Clearly thats aimed at people with more money then sense and not wanting to shop round.
