further to my question from last week, reconditioned motor now fitted the only problem is that it goes up and down about three times as fast as the other one and the adjuster knob drops out of the bottom of the motor. how do i stop this happening and also the knob wont adjust the height of the lamp upwards it just spins round until you totaly unscrew it from the motor so headlamp sits low in the nose of the car. iknow its something simple but its really p1551ng me off at the moment
any answers will be gratefully recieved
Colin

The knob on the motor isn't there to adjust the height of the pod, it's an emergency wind-up in case the motor dies. Early motors could be wound either way but the later ones had a one-way clutch on the knob. If the knob keeps falling off, maybe the locking screw isn't locking it!
Not much you can do about the operating speed; they are rarely the same anyway but you could try stripping the other motor, lubing the oily bits and polishing the commutator, that may make it a bit quicker.

How to explain ...?

As Wedg1e says, the knob on the bottom is ONLY so you can wind up the headlamps by hand if the motor fails - so it's a legal safety thing. It does not adjust anything

The MOTOR ITSELF has the two 'STOP' points (i.e. UP and DOWN) built into it. The motor will work (when wired up) correctly even when it isn't mounted in the car. So therefore the chances are a new motor won't stop in exactly the same places as the old one, PLUS you may not have bolted the motor on its mounting in exactly the same place.

OK - make sense so far ?? I hope so

The actual 'sweep' of the motor (the difference between UP and DOWN) should be the same as the old one, but my be just slightly different.
What you need to do is to adjust the arm length (the one with the long hex tube and two lockscrews). turn the headlamps on to wind the pod up, disconnect battery to keep it there.
Take headlamp out completely, undo lockscrews (if they are there) and turn the long hex tube. The pod should go up or down. Adjust until pod hits the 'TOP' stop (a bit of heater hose on mine glued to the underside of nose). Tighten back up. Turn off headlamps, reconnect battery and see where pod stops. Readjust until you get what you want for closed and open.
refit the bits....

Does that help ? I hope so.

Thanks for both replies i have now adjusted the hex bolt on the arm of the motor and it work perfectly, still alot faster than the other lamp but who cares i will get that motor stripped when the novelty of the comedy headlamps wears off now i just want to get out and drive the thing while the weather is still ok
cheers Colin

Glad we could help !! Enjoy !!

If the other motor is slow, you may be lucky and bits may just need a good clean. Check ALL the pivots too, including the headlamp pod bolts, any part can gum up, more or less.

Also it could be the motor brushes, which can be replaced, but check everything else first.

WD40 is your friend....give all the pivots a spray first and see if it helps.
