I have a Chesil Speedster that is in need of a new engine at some point in the not too distant future. When i bought it it had a 1776 cc refurb unit from the Engine Shop. Originally it had the factory installed Annie levics 1800 unit.

I've noticed a large selection of suppliers on the Internet, and have been recommended some (and warned against others) by the local garage I will use to do the work. However, I would be really grateful for any positive recommendations as to where to source a good quality classic air cooled unit (not interested in scooby engines) so I can factor them into the mix. My view is it's always better to have as much info as possible.

Also, does anyone have any views on how much difference a good twin port 1600 would make, given our speed limits over here are 40mph, and we have no motorways!

Many thanks!

Not trying to be flippant, but what difference will the engine make? Surely all you need is one that works well? Maybe the biggest easily obtainable with the most torque, just to make it easiest to drive.

I know b.all about VW engines, but wasn't the 1302S lump supposed to be quite good?

Unless you buy a brand new engine (mexican?), I gather that most of the type 1 engines that seem to be available are reconditioned and built up with new parts. Therefore, they can vary greatly depending on the people that put them together, as regards longivity, durability and power output.

I'm really looking for recommendations as to who puts together a good reconditioned type 1 engine? I'm not in the UK otherwise I'd probably rock up to a few places and check them out myself.

Look through - and ask - on this forum http://www.volkszone.co.uk/VZi/

Aircooled VW forum, and a huge amount of knowledge on there.

As for engines, thats all down to you really, how much do you want to spend? what sort of performance are you after? how 'original' you would like it look?
For info, I had a type 1 1641cc twin port which I put on Webber 44's ... and to be fair it was a quick little engine - in a beach buggy, which probably weighs something pretty similar to the 356.

Got any pics of yours? I'd like to build one when I have the time/funds!

The VW engines are pretty bullet proof - you can run them dry of oil till they seize, and can still be rescued (it was a friend....). Seriously though, can it not be rebuilt? The 1776 is a good engine as the block's already been opened up for the big bore barrels / pistons. What's wrong with it? Worn barrels can be honed or replaced for less than £150 IIRC. Similar for heads if they've had it. The usual test of the short engine is to grab the main pulley and see how much slack there is in the main bearings, though this can be fixed as well...

I know the big names in the VW world, but don't have first hand experience of engine builders so so want to make a recommendation. Have you considered a US import? plenty of builders out there since you have to pay for shipping anyway?

The engine in there is already a reconditioned unit. The main issue is that its got a fairly bad oil leak which is proving difficult to remedy. On its last visit to the garage they had the engine out and replaced the rear main bearing seal but to no avail. It could well be a porous block. I've been given the option of having the block rebuilt again, but i've been told that that might not even fix it, given its already a reconditioned unit. I'm told that older "tired" engines are known to throw the oil up so that it leaks out when the car is at rest? Maybe someone could explain this to me?

Cheers

Remtec are good and VW Heritage have just started selling a twin port 1600 built totally from new parts.

I saw some real horror stories in Remtec engines and wouldn't touch one with the proverbial...

It seems that these things are a little cyclic though, 'cos the one I bought is great, but the guy who built it (who had a bulletproof reputation at the time) has since supplied some less-than-successful engines recently it seems.

A mate of mine makes VW engines (from new bits) - he did a lot of work on my VW based kit car a few years back.

However, he's very busy and a bit of a perfectionist - so if there's anything slightly wrong with your car, he'd want to get that fixed as well...
