After getting some truely shocking insurance qoutes and also having to stay delivering pizzas a little longer ive decided to go classic (or old) with the next car. MK1 Golf GTI is abit more than my phone bill to insure a month.

How many miles can the 1.8lump handle with servicing etc kept up to date?

From the qoutes ive been getting from confused, early 1980 and before seem to get adrian flux offering low qoutes.

But what could be used as a pizza delivery car as jobs are rare i want to keep my foot in the door but also run a classic at the same time, with the money saved on insurance for things if/when they go wrong..

4k budget, not bothered about how many seats etc, must average high 20's round town, must be the odd one cropping up within 100miles of manchester (dad doesnt believe in travelling down the country for a car,and need his guidance when spending 4grand on something).

HELP! Anything youve spotted please link if you wish, can buy next week if i have to but got a month or so before it gets desperate.

Something German - older BM 3 / 5 series, Audi 80 coupe? I would steer clear of Fords etc. of that age!

Delivering take aways needs alot of preventitive maintanence. It wears out bushes, brake pads, discs etc reallt quickly so whatever you buy make sure the 'consumable' parts are reasonably priced and easy to fit.
I wasn't the slowest driver but my little 106 Diesel ate 2 rear beams in 4 months at 150 quid each and a morning of swearing at it to fit them.

I reckon anything pre '85 would be ok as long as its not too exotic.
MPG will no noubt play a roll in the decision too?
Old classics are no where near as frugal as new metal

But hey, If you delivered my pizza in a cool car, I'd definatley tip biggrin

Don't see why not?

How about trawling ebay with a search with LPG in the title?

Sometimes throws up some interesting cars that have an LPG conversion fitted - voila, cheap fuel and running costs!

Thank me later bowtie

Well by going classic im freeing up 150quid a month that can be used for keeping it on the road (if needs be).

Ive figured i need to be averaging 30, or atleast high 20's MPG.

My thoughts are if im spending most my time driving around the same area i may aswell do it looking cool smile

Just done a quick ebay search - there's 400 cars with LPG for sale.

Found this within 2 minutes - a 2000 BMW E39 520, lots of extras, LPG kit, £3850

Doubt it, my automatic E30 316 would probably struggle to average high 20's around town.

I reckon spend £500 on a diesel 106 or something, and spend a bit more on something nice if you have the room. £4k is a lot of money to play with in my eyes, even with insurance.

A good contender might be this. Not sure on the MPG but I imagine low 20's:

Or this (can you tell I love 80's BM's!!:

I can't really think of anything else that would fit the bill. I've done my stint of takeaway delivering some years ago and I did it in an E36 325i. I spent about £15 on fuel in an evening (around 80 miles) and was paid for £11 so already lost out there. However the wage + tips made it worthwhile and it was nice wafting around in something with a good engine and leather seats biggrin

Why? Pizza's go on the front seat, if your gentle it won't drink fuel and will be more reliable than most cars of that age!

I have never heard of this "must be able to carry a pizza" criteria before.

something 80s can qualify as classic and reliable without costing a fortune in consumables, I'm a big fan of all things German eg 3/5 series BMWs, MK1/2 Golfs, VW Corrados, Audi 80 coupes, Merc 190/300s all handle the miles very well. OR some older Jap vehicles, Preludes, Celicas, mr2s etc

I've got a Golf 3 GTI and I have tested it extensively and it will fit a pizza inside. Cheap to buy, possibly cheap to insure. Mine had 102k on it when bought and has 188k now with only oil and filter changes. Still going strong.

I have a 1997 Nissan Micra 1.0 K11 'bubble shape' for sale.... £300

Those things were absolutely MADE for pizza delivery.

Nippy, small, reliable, indestructible, economical, cheap to insure...

And you won't care when you scrape it turning round in a dark street in the pissing rain at midnight looking for and address!

What's not to like? smile

Sorry it's not a classic though!
