Three bright flashes in sky South of Winchester

Tonight between 1900 and 1925, we witnessed three bright flashes in the sky to the South of Winchester. At first I thought it was a storm in the distance as I only saw a flash in the sky out of the corner of my eye, but the skies were clear. The second flash, we saw what looked like an explosion in the sky coming from a bluish ball that was bright enough to blind me for several seconds, and the third flash we saw in the mirror as we turned down a country lane.
The colour was an extremely bright white with a blue tint, I know that the RAF train regularly in the area so could it be some training missiles or something like that? Haven't seen anything like it before so I'm baffled!

My wife saw these flashes too. She had just left our home at about 7.00 pm and was in the car driving towards Hambledon village when she saw the first flash. It was so bright that she actually turned the car round and went back to our home to check that everything was alright. When she got home a few minutes later she saw a second flash. She then resumed her journey seeing a third flash in the sky when she got to Clanfiled and a fourth one just as she joined the A3. The sky was almost clear and there was no thunder. She described the flashes as being bright white.

Ball lightening is a strange phenomenon that is little understood. People have reported seeing it in all sorts of different conditions. It seemingly can appear anywhere, and some people even claim to have seen it appear within buildings. There has been a lot of solar activity this week and people have been reporting seeing the northern lights is the north and in Scotland, so perhaps even this could have something to do with it. But given that it was a very clear night in our area the most likely cause was us seeing the flashes of the lightening storm in Sussex.Could it be related to the huge solar flare that's going on at the moment? I remember many years ago seeing white flashes on the horizon when the sky was clear. It was subsequently reported that, later that night, The Northern Lights had been visible. I understand that the same is the case at the moment. Not that you'd see The Northern Lights in the Southern sky, but maybe what was seen was related.

Funny you should say that, as a kid I always remember my uncle ( mums fathers brother, so not sure uncle is the right term ) telling us how this experience had happened to him. A ball of light just appeared from nowhere in his lounge. As he got up to watch it, it worked its way across the room, passed though a partition wall into his kitchen and then passed through the outer wall of his flat. Although I was very young and the time I can still remember it being quite a topic of conversation that weekend.

At work today I overheard a lady talking about how her, and her husband saw some spectacular flashes in the sky, around the same time you've described. I dismissed her claim, as her scientific explanation was completely wrong. Plus, I wasn't covinced the recent CME from the sun, would be visible this far south of the UK.
Anyway, skip forward to this evening. I was driving through Waterlooville/Widley (Hampshire), and as I approached the top of Ports Down Hill, I saw a massive flash of light. Not lightning, the whole sky lit up, a very white flash with a light blue haze. The odd thing was, it was between the same time that you saw the flashes yesterday. Obviously lots of MOD stations on Ports Down Hill, so could well be something that they're testing. But, still thought I would also add my sightings to this post.

Also, regarding the short hailstorm yesterday. A resident in Bournemouth had some mysterious material fall from the sky:

I started a thread last summer after seeing pretty much exactly what you describe around Middle Wallop airfield which is of course near to Winchester. They were exactly as you describe, three flashes, one of which was greenish. You describe the long flash lighting up the whole sky exactly.
Anyway the consensus was that it was either ball lightning or army flares, my feeling was always the latter to be honest, there just never felt like weather related events.

Interesting one this, made more so by the fact we have several independent people saying the same story.
You have Boscombe Down in the area too, that is an MoD test site for aircraft, if its in that direction, perhaps its something there?
Also, it could be some kind of light flashing, maybe some piece of abstract art or celebration?
I only mention it as around the year 2000 there was a folly tower up on a hill near where I lived at the time, which was around 20 miles away as the crow flies.
For the millenium, some artist bloke put a lighthouse light on top of it, which as it spun around, would 'flash' across the sky quite brightly.
Perhaps there is a big strobe light or something set up, although why, I couldn't even guess at.
