numpty bit of driving by me parking on wrong side of road in a bay and didn't notice a big pointy kerb sticking out - hit it with rear offside and it has nipped the tyre onto the alloy.

Alloy is scuffed and there is a strip of tyre about 2cm ,long and 3 or 4mm thick flapped away from the sidewall, right on the bead part by the alloy. Can't see bead or any fibres on the newly exposed chunk in the sidewall but it looks nasty. Do I need to look out for it bulging, get it looked at or bin it? Anyone in the tyre business that could provide an informed opinion?

hmm, would probably be fine, depends on the car / driving style / what the car is used for I guess.

Is it no good swapping it with the spare and using it as that?

Sounds like the kerb protection, shouldn't be anything to worry about.

Could be wrong, but if no fibres are showing then its MOT worthy, which in theory should mean safe to use?

Driven many spirited miles in the same situation, should be fine if you can't see cord etc.

thanks people, it could indeed be as it is kind of finger shaped, doesn't look pretty. will drive steadily and keep a close eye on it.

It is exactly the same! Thanks for that, will get it stuck down with some vulcanising solution. There is only a few mm left before it is down to the wear indicator bar anyway.

Thanks so much for linking that thread.
