What's not to love about this? Its perhaps the greatest modern BMW...

Tri-turbo Diesel, 381 hp, 546 lb-ft, and it'll get over 40 MPG (American) highway...

High performance + Diesel + wagon= WIN

I would have to agree.

That would be a great daily to have along side something a bit more interesting.

Someone said it's M5 money. Any truth in that?

I want to like this car. I'm a car enthusiast to the core, I know that I would love to own this car, and I really want BMW to make a F11 M5 and this is the closet we have so far. However, for some reason I just can’t get excited by it confused. TBH, I'm starting to get a bit bored with these mega powerful cars because I feel they are simply getting irrelevant. How much power does one need? Yes, I know it’s nice to know that you have a lot of potential under your right foot, but 99% of the time I simply find it frustrating because once on the move, regardless of what gear you are in, rev the engine past 5,500 rpm and you will be breaking the speed limit by some margin.

I live Germany, so I have the advantage of being able go out onto the Autobahn, floor the accelerator, and properly use the available performance of such a car. However, it isn’t easy given that amount of traffic and the increasing number of KMs with speed restrictions. In nearly every other country on the planet, one cannot even get close to using the full potential on the open road.

On country roads, it is even worse, because to extract proper enjoyment from the chassis one has to be travelling at ridiculous speeds that if the police were to catch you, you would lose your license instantly, and if you were to crash, would probably hurt a great deal. Here in Germany, the police like to hide behind trees and conceal their speed detection equipment so you have next to no chance of actually spotting, and thereby adjusting your speed, the speed trap. Therefore, you are reluctant to open the taps.

That is the attraction for me. It's not about the limits of the law, or the power of the car. If you buy a high performance car you buy it because you want to enjoy the exhilaration that the car provides.. you just have to be more careful about when and where you do it wink When you get that opportunity, I believe you appreciate the car much more. If I could afford another car that is capable of 200mph, I would own one in a blink of an eye. Opportunities to use such cars are becoming rarer every day so enjoy it while it lasts.

I've seen the future and it's not looking good...

I like that, but then i also like the latest Citroen C5 tourer. The 3ltr V6 chip fat burner produces enough umph needed for a family wagon.

I like it on a technical level but a 530D, really if we are honest provides all the shove you ever "need" in a diesel estate, and then a bit more, kind of seems like overkill for its intended role but then, if you can afford the difference, go for it, might as well.

Shame it's not coming to the UK, along the fact that BMW won't make a F11 M5. Ah well I'll have to settle for a 520d when I change my car as most of the used ones on the market seem to be those.
