Today I drove from West Wales to Blackpool via Heads of the Valleys in my 993 C4. I drove through sunshine, rain and snow.

I wasn't worried about engine meltdown, miles per gallon or depreciation. Simply getting from A to B in comfort, style and a lot of speed.

Absolute joy.

Oh yeah, and I can never resist the look back when I park at a service station or in a car park smile

They are just a pure joy aren't they. Not that fast, a bit noisy, stupid interior.

But when you are on it, they just sing.

That depends on what evolution of 993 you are driving. If its the 911GT or GT2, its nippy wink

Yes indeed. Sadly, my middle management salary doesn't run to a GT2!

Oh well, Carrera it is. driving

A 993 thats all working nice and tight underneath is plenty fast enough IMO for the public road. Ok, so it won't have the lunge of a 997 turbo up the motorway sliproad but if the point to point experience on a mix of roads feels slow then it's not being driven properly. They are just not modern enough to feel slow IMO.

Deep joy cloud9

The older cars may be slightly odd, but boy do they make you grin when it's right driving

I may be wrong but it does not seem that a C4 version is as popular as a C2 but if this is correct why is it the case ?

I dont know for certain whether that is true, as we would need a good sample of views. They are diffrent cars and are each faster than each other in different conditions and situations. It depends what you want from the car.

RWD vs AWD (And FWD!) has been well debated on PH many times and will rage forever.

I prefer RWD personally on a 911.

Love 993. Personally I would take the immediate response of na engine over the ultimate thrust of a turbo. C4 has great grip, but C2 is more fun. When I had a 993 C4 the local Porsche garage lent me a 993 C2 for the day, as I turned left out of my road and accelerated away the back end broke traction briefly (I know the rules about turning and accelerating honest). Never happened with 993 C4 in over 3 years of use at the same turning in all types of weather. Now have a 993RS for track days, yet to have more fun in any other Porsche although 3.8 GT3RS runs it close!

Each has it's fans. Previous cars will probably be a factor in the decision. I came from older Porsches so 2WD was the only option for me.

Have to admit I have had the back end of my C4 step out on the odd occasion but in terms of grip and stability the C4 wins hands down for me. driving

It never ceases to amaze me how a 16 yr old car with over 95k miles can feel so tight and handle so well....just a joy! smile

I wanted a C2 as that is "regarded" as the one to have. Couldn't find a good manual at the time so got a C4. Many is the driver who would likely struggle to tell the difference between the two in real world driving. I suspect most just tell themselves they don't need or want 4wd as they are such talented drivers.

Not sure it's got anything to do with a misguided sense pf talent. 23 years after the introduction of the mainstream 4WD 911, Porsche must still feel the 2 and 4 appeal to different types of driver or they wouldn't still offer both variants today.

Got to do the same trip next week. Picked the C4 because of the types of weather we get in the UK and coming back on the M6 the other day, it seemed like a wise choice for me. Standing water, spray, sleet and hail. Not fun.

It's the fastest car I've owned and a good introduction to the 911. I will have a 997 Turbo at some point however I reckon it's taken me 6 months + to get to really know this car and how to get the most out of it.I haven't even got into heel and toe, trail braking and all that malarkey yet. There is a woman locally who has a 3.2 cabriolet and she says she has never taken it over 3,000rpm. When she told me, I just stood there with my mouth open. These cars loved being revved once you've warmed them up.

Oh yeah, started to fill up with higher octane unleaded when I can and when available. Maybe it's the placebo effect but the car seems faster to me and the engine note sweeter. Am I imagining this because I've just spent an extra tenner at the pumps ?

Next stop Silverstone for the 1 to 1 tuition in my car with the instructor so I can get more out of the machine and understand the limits and weight changes under braking etc.
