The last 3 copies of Autosport have justifiably celebrated the lives and careers of 3 great Brit F1 drivers in Moss, Clark and Stewart. Perhaps this week would feature John Surtees or Graham Hill - but no, we move onto our Nige.

What a hatchet job. Endless derogatory quotes about his manipulative and challenging character - the phrase pain in the a**e appears countless times. No doubt he will have read it by now - can't think he will be terribly happy...

Sometimes that descriptive phrase goes hand in hand with being a "driven" personality , it's what makes them succeed and not settle for second best , there are certainly enough other opinions praising his work , ultimately it's what he did most of the time on the track that mattered to most of us.

It's typical anti Mansell crap as always.

Editorial meeting would have gone like this 'Mansell. Pain in the arse. Get a few people to say this, print the issue & show he was a pain'.

Which he isnt as had many dealings with him back in the 80's when my employer at the time was one of his personal sponsors.

He was easy to deal with, was happy to fly himself into Kings Norton, Birmingham, in his Jet Ranger helicopter to attend motorsport evenings for us.

Chatted with anyone who wanted to chat with him, did what was asked without whinging, sends my mum a birthday & christmas card every year & never forgets.

A top bloke in my opinion.

People forget that he was one of the few who would stand up to Senna & one of the few who would actually race against him.

Yes he had his faults - dont we all - however i believe his achievements have been under-estimated & he deserves much more credit than he has ever received.

After he went to the States & spanked their arses in 93 didnt he?

So lets have some well deserved praise for him please rather than the usual negative st.

+1.

I hear Steve Jobs was a pain to work with as well.

Absolutely agree, the Driver[s] in question fuelled many an article and had a hand in many publications of all sorts being sold at the time of their particular eras, very popular people when at their peak etc,but I suppose with nobody in the modern era being able to free themselves up for any meaningful comment of any note, and with it being winter and all I suppose Autosport have decided to do a " lets show a different side of someone" because it will be different and we will sell copies.......EQUIVALENT of Noel Gallagher who said about " Be Here Now"....we should have called it F### #t that will do.....sums up the F1 and motorsport publications for the past few years really[only my opinion}...... Magazines are mainly Adverts framed by what we already know or can guess when Dollars not talent are involved in some cases.Lap times and results tell storys better.......THE Drivers themselves should know what they've acheived in their careers and realize that they dont just end up as ex -drivers...E.g Ambassadors,Campaigners,Buisnessmen,Teachers ,Driver -Coaches,Family - Men,Commentators, and general all round inspiration for what can be achieved despite people around you not being convinced. P.S ..Good Songs on said Album... still sold copies...

Ii thought it was an excellent series of articles on Mansell. Not too bothered about the other 'heros'.
I liked the honesty in the quotes from the people that worked with him. The fact is some people in the paddock thought he was a pain in the arse, and now we know who. It also explained his character a bit better, he was a bit delusional about his ability, he did get roundly beaten quite often in his early career, but came good when experience over comes natural talent in later life. I.e. the naturals lose their 'natural' ability, but the 'made' drivers keep performing at the same level.

Fair play to Autosport in not pulling their punches, they had the bottle to print it as it is, not some rose tinted bks that they normally do.

The most interesting comment was the one from Beechdean motorsport. Put a slightly different light on the Mansell boys performance.

a bit delusional about his ability? Have you seen Australia in 86?? Very few drivers could have wrestled that car to safety when the tyre went. He should have been WDC in 86. Possibly 87 too

Our Nige is a one of the great drivers; British or not! Even Ferrari loved him.

He is quick in pretty much anything; and still is quick at his age.

Pure class.

Mansell may have been a whinger but he was fearless on the track and one of the few top modern F1 driver who tried his hand at BTCC and LeMans, always ready to race in something, somewhere. The Tifosi didn't call him Il Lione for nothing.

Sadly i assume that Damon Hill would get the same sort of treatment in Autosport.

No read the artical yet but Our Nige will always come across to most as a moaner. He isn’t that bad, he’s just from Birmingham and “they all talk like that Sir.”

Added to which his ability to play on this should never be underestimated, quite a clever man, if not exactly Newey/Brawn bright.

And to think I used to pay Autosport a fortune over the course of a year to read it each week.
I think the general perceived talent and contribution to the history of F1 of our Nige is vastly under valued esp outside of the UK. For clarity I am and always will be a massive fan of Mr Mansell.
One only has to look at just how little he was considered/covered in the recent Senna film which for me was a massive oversight by the film maker!

Great video of our Nige - however isn't that Imola - in mirror image? Looks very strange

Sort of - but a lesser driver might have lost it, hit the wall, parked it in the middle of the track and caused a red flag. Lesser driver would then have become WDC ....

Mansell is my all time hero and I have no problem with Autosport nor that Mansell's character could be, errr, challenging a lot of times but it was his way of achieving success.

I'd rather read up on a full rounded picture of someone than an article that sickly lavishes praise upon praise.

Graham Hill for instance could put on his charm offensive in front of a camera yet his PR skill seemed to reach the limit for autograph hunters (according to Lord March) and behind garage doors he was no different to Mansell.
