I'm obsessed with Rioja at the moment and am just coming to the end of a good couple of months drinking a nice Reserva (Marquis de Valido) that I picked up on a great deal from The co-op.

So, looking around at deals, I have bought 6 bottles of this: Faustino Rivero Rioja Reserva from Tesco.

Has anyone tried it? I'm hoping it's nice so I can stock up.

On another note, what other wines would people recommend I try?

I really should try some different wines but can't get off the Rioja at the moment as I love it so much!

Regards

Duncan

Dear DuncanM,

also have a go at Valdepenas and Ribero del Douro, yummy.

I'm still fond of Faustino 1. I recall in the 80s it being a fiver at Trago Mills.
Also Marquws de Riscal, Marques de Caceres, Marques de Murrieta, Amezola, Muga, Arana, Imperial, Ygay, Campo Viejo all tasted good to me. Mix of Gran/Reserva/Crianzas in there,

regards,
Jet

I'm also a perennial Rioja drinker, but got an absolutely lovely bottle of Argentinean Malbec down to £4.99 in Tescos the other night (mental block as to what exactly it was right now, but can rescue the bottle this afternoon (I'm going to buy a job lot more for sure) if you’re interested!)

Thanks for the replies, looks like I'm not the only Rioja fan smile.

I'll try a Malbec sometime then, have had Malbec out and like it well enough smile.

I kinda need a go to wine when I can't get a good deal on Rioja.

Malbec is on the list smile.

yes

Also Lagunilla Reserva 2006 can sometimes be found for £5 a bottle (normally £12.50).

I am also a Rioja obsessive and recently tried the Lagunilla 2006. It was truly excellent.

OP, this is rather obvious I'm sure but there are also of course very good tempranillos to be found at reasonable prices. As a 'quaffer', Aldi's Toro Loco Tempranillo at £3.49 is a good everday drinker. Waitrose sell Marques de Calatrava Organic Tempranillo (I think there is a non organic version too). It was recently discounted but I think the usual price is £6.50 and it is one of the best I've tried.

In general I look for good deals on Reservas as I have found I seem to enjoy these the most, and when discounted they usually offer superb value for money.

I like Marques de Caceres and Siglo which are both reliable.

Tesco also has an offer on Berberana which is half price down to £5.99. Cant remember which one it is though.

Thanks for this, I have tried a few Tempranillo's but not found one good enough yet. I'll try the Aldi one as that might be a good cheap go to smile.

Big Marques de Caceres fan too. Baron de Ley is also a cracking drop.

This is also very nice - well worth splashing out a little bit extra on.

Not overly impressed with the Faustino Rivero Rioja Reserva.

Shame really, tastes like a £5 bottle rather than an £11 reduced.

Feel a bit short changed and need to hunt around for something else.

For reference, I don'r like to spend too much more than £5-6 a bottle as I am cheap/poor/tight/drink too much wink.

I am not sure if it is possible to buy spanish sweet ones here in the UK, but they are just amazing (Competa, Moscatel, Pedro Ximenez, Gloria,...).

Look out for the 2004 Gran Reserva that was on offer at £7.50 (down from £15) definitley worth the extra £2 over the normal reserva.

Wish I'd gone for that frown... Had a bottle of Castillo San Lorenzo Gran Reserva over the weekend out of desperation for a fairly cheap bottle to go with a Spanish casserole on a snowy night in - pretty ordinary, which is how I seemed to remember it would be!

As for that Malbec I mentioned - it's "Monte Real" - sold out when I went back for more, now back up to full price (but still probably worth it IMHO!)

Hey Paul,

I'll definitely keep an eye out for that when it comes on offer. smile.

I remember you recommending the 2006 on my last thread now!

If you like this, try the CO-OP De Valido when it goes back on offer as they are similar but the De Valido just beats the Berberana imo.
