i think the reality is if it were a money-no-object choice with no concerns over running costs and fuelling EVERYONE will go for the m5, so from that perspective its a pointless poll.
However, the real world isnt like that. Even someone spending £50-60-70K will have some boundaries to work within, thats where the 550d will pull the advantage.

M5 is the only choice isn't it!?

As someone who has spent 70k on a car, yes the real world does come into your thinking, but at 28mpg the M5 is real world, with an M5 at sub 20's the diesel makes sense but with the current uplift in petrol efficiency the gap is closing especially as in the real world the diesels don't actually make their (MPG) numbers. Do you know what Daemon, I've thought alot about all this diesel torque stuff recently, so I took my 911 out for blat today and the thing is I wasn't thinking about diesel when I came back, there is no comparison IMHO.
It's just people desperately trying to doublethink themselves into their new reality of cars driven (heh) by the need to minimise the impact of punitive taxation. As an aside, I had an F11 535d M Sport Touring on an extended test drive over last weekend, as I am thinking of getting one as a company car.
It was astonishingly good. Very, very fast, great handling , steering, ride and brakes and a lush interior.
And it is below the magic 160g of CO2 for my company too, despite having around 313bhp and 465 lb/ft of torque. A remarkable achievement by BMW.
True to Pistonheads form I haven't driven the F10 M5 or the M550d, but I must say, don't write off the M550d simply because it is a diesel.
