Watching the Alfa Top Gear special, it struck me that Alfas nowadays are just rebadged fiats, it seems the brand exists in name only.

The same applied to Saab if we're realistic, and to the MG badge applied to a random Chinese car (all in my opinion).

What other brands would PHers say exist only in name nowadays?

Based on your theory, surely Audi/VW/Skoda and Seat, as they are basically rebodied versions of the same car??

The same could be said for Peugeot and Citroen

Volvo's are mostly Ford underneath

The list of platform shared cars is huge

Most cars are 'badge engineered' today, look at the VAG range as an example.

O.....M......G !!!!!!!! smashshootpunch :red card:

You have dared to desicrate the name that one shall not speak out loud.....

Alfa Romeo, as being............a brand........in name only

judge

Burn the heretic.

I actually fully agree, that the modern day offerings, are mere Fiats, good or bad, and have zero tenuous link to the motorsport heritage, (they do like that badge though, dont they), of about 80 years ago. But await the references to the Alfas from the touring car age, the ones that had about as much link to the production cars as the Cavaliers, and Mondeos, and the Volvos, the Nissans, that also took part......i.e Sillouete cars only.

Erm, the alfas share a lot with fiat, but they are clearly their own brand, or at least a subsection in its own right.

Think of it as Great Britain if you will. Welsh people speak english, use the same currency, same systems and governments, but are undeniably welsh.
(Was going to use scotland as an example but thought better)

But to answer your question, the yaris shares a lot with a certain pug...

Exactly - give us a rwd 75 replacement, I must admit I'm of the generation where all Alfas look fine but don't drive as well as a ford.

Okay I'd take a 147 3.2 smile

I was indeed stirring a little - but let's see Alfa come top for driving satisfaction and low on every other count!

You've got a 75 rwd replacement, and a far better offering, by about 3 billion%, the BMW, without the silly inboard discs, and totally unnecessary rear gearbox.

What!!!! a 147, over an R32 ?????? really.

I'm with Matthias on this one, the italians are different, they speaka the italian...use the euro....just !!!!......have governments.....bunga bunga!!!!!!..... and are undeniably Italian, in so much, as they, fk off to the bar for 4 hours, come back pissed, and can't rememeber where the hell all the leeetle bits of electrics go. Never mind, we'll sell them to the stupid English types, they like the pretty badge.

Hey....Sarkozy.....have you seen the rack on'a my latest defense minister.

I'd class the new m5 as a proper BMW M, the M diesels are a modern m535i.... Except they can't be if you've been in an M535i.

You should try to avoid doing that yourself.

The e60 didn't get great reviews, I'd still argue BMW are not just a name... Unlike Audi!

Being at work, I would love the chance.

You, on the other hand, seem to have dragged yourself into the thread after being out, maybe ? Hic!!!!!!, or lurking.

If Peugeots are all citroens and citroens are all peugeots which brand starts it off?

For stuff like that there will be a base which comes out first which the rest of the range is based upon eg Audis SEATS ,etc being a golf underneath.

I rather enjoyed your original post, it was intended as a vaguely amusing thread...

I'll chuck another one in: Lancia- dead brand.

Yep, not so much badge engineering, like of old, but IME, I went from a VW Bora to a Seat Leon, and the quality went downhill rapidly. Hard to quantify, but the '02 Bora was a much better screwed together thing than the '08 Leon, oh, and the '08 Golf is also alot better, than the Seat.

So, as per the title, I think you're right. "seat" isn't a meaningful concept any more. The brand exists in name only.

Hey you!!!! what's with the "vaguely amusing", that's some of my best stuff, sorry about the heckler, youngsters and their drink, tsk!

Now, Lancia, did I ever tell you about the cargo ship that capsized, and they salvaged the cars, and sold them to us Brits. Bloody Italians.

You're not Italian by the way, are you, especially Sicillian.
