HDR long exposure Rig shot

I'm interested in getting a few shots of my car off a camera rig. Like the examples below




What sort of shutter speed should I use and any other recommendations would be grately appreciated

Depends how fast the car moves & how much blur you want - anything from 2-30 seconds might work. As is so often the case with photography, give it a go and see what works for you!

Thanks for the reply. I planned on doing it at a fairly low travelling speed and will give it a try using different shutter speeds

p.s. Both of these I was sub 5mph, pretty much could have pushed the car to save running the engine to be honest

Re the HDR element of your photo - can we assume you're planning on taking one frame and then creating multiple different exposures from it at the RAW processing stage in order to create your HDR image, or were you somehow hoping to take the three different exposures in-camera?

Great shot there mcmacro that's exactly the sort of shot im wanting to get.

Small world baz, I found your flikr account on a Google images search and theres some amazing shots on there. The two I've shown inspired me to try this out.

What would the best locations be? There's an underground car park near me that's well lit that I am going to try .

Hi clived, I was planning on shooting three seperate frames but i think this will be pain to edit after. I am still a noob with my camera and still shooting in JPEG. I got Photoshop for Christmas so was planning on using the post processing to improve my images. Any advice on the raw side of things and I will give this a try also.

Given the car will be rolling, the background will be different in your three frames - bit of an issue for HDR... ;-)

3 exposures from 1 shot in Lightroom. Sorted ;-)

The important part of the 3 images is the car, the background is easy, either simply overlay your fav version or if it doesn't look right just tonemap whichever single background works best to help it blend in with the 3 shots on the car.

Same one I have (I've a few small extensions I welded up myself to get a little further out if required).

I've ran mine with 20d and battery grip installed...it works fine, just keep pumping the vac out every so often to prevent it losing suction...

I dont know why you're saying HDR...because none of those examples are...at least i dont think so. There's no need for HDR. Depending on how much light there is your exposure should be anywhere between 1sec and a long time. I'd suggest use more light and a shorter shutter (2 secs maybe). This was about 1 or 2secs in bright daylight using a ND filter.
