Motorway game ideas ... bored with i-spy

We've the following games for our long motorway jaunts, new ones for 2012 would be nice

- Playing "Is it French?" when seeing a broken car in the distance or "Is it German?" when seeing an accident
- Longest time without using a control apart from the steering wheel (fun, especially with cruise control)
- Guessing price of fuel at next service station when refueling, loser pays

On our last Euro trip we counted the all the individual lights and motors in our E38 728 ... over an hour of fun!

Count down the seconds until the brake lights illuminate on the rep-mobile approaching a car at speed in lane 3.

Guess the car towing the caravan.

Although and iPhone would probably be a better idea!

Hmm, the only 'fun' to be had on the motorway is anticipating other people's overtakes, and making life awkward for the blatant mlms.

"pretend unmarked police car"

rules of the game:

you wait for some prick to glue himself to your rear bumper because he cant wait 30 seconds for you to pull over (people who wait for you to pull over before hooning off are not eligible for this game)

you then follow them at a safe but constant distance matching them move for move as thou videoing them

the objective of the game is get them to pull over into lane 1 at 50 mph

you loose if you flash your lights, have a hi vis jacket on display or make any action other than following them.

dont get carried away and follow them onto there driveway

When the kids were smaller we played a simple one: guess how much fuel we've used since some agreed start point. Driver checks using the trip computer and closest guess wins.

It was quite good for getting them to do mental arithmetic (speed, distance, time, mpg, gallons/litres etc.) and also getting them to understand how much of my hard earned was being used to buy fuel

Obviously the driver isn't allowed to play

Having worked in shipping for 10 years I can delight you with 'The Container Game'

1 point per 20ft container, 2 points per 40 ft, double points for getting the shipping line.

Out of gauge/special equipment get bonus points.
Container yards and ships down count.

There's car cricket. I forget the exact details (although you can agree your own before you play), but you get a run for every black car you pass, 4 for a van, 6 for a lorry, and out for a white car.

Some good ideas already. A bit cringeworthy but singing the "coming round the mountain" song making each child take turns can work well. It's surprising what they come up with. From what other parents have told me then if you just want to keep them quiet then it's DVD players or Nintento DS. We currently have neither

My favourite game is trying to control my annoyance at the shocking standard of motorway driving displayed in this country.

I like the pretending to be an unmarked police car idea.

I was mooned at recently from the back of a minibus. It was difficult to return the compliment whilst driving.

Not strictly a game, but I see how little I can use my brakes on the motorway - good lesson in anticipation and good practice. It also gives me a sense of superiority over most of the morons hammering it up to the car in front, slamming the brakes on and cause a domino effect for the cars behind them.
I also like the lapping the middle lane moron, but can't beat 8 - that must have been hilarious.

When overtaking a middle lane loser, fire off your washer jets, if they have to wipe their screen you win 10 points, if they change lane you get a knighthood.

(this works better if you activate headlight washers to as they get a proper soaking)

Spot a place name on a signpost.
Make up a limerick, one line per passenger. Must scan

In both cases, keep it clean

So go up in Lane 3, drop to Lane 1. Let them overtake, then repass them in Lane 3.

Can normally get at least 5-6 laps
