Sub £3k 928 S4.... would it ruin me?
Discussion
I've spotted such a beast advertised locally and although I've got enough cars right now, I can't get it out of my head.
Would this put me off Porsche ownership for life? I was hoping that my next car would be a 944 as my first Porsche (or indeed, German car full stop) but wasn't really planning on it being until next year. I know the 928 is a whole different kettle of fish but I thought they fetched way more than £3K?
The story goes that the owner has bought it purely for the registration plate hence the low price. It appears to be taxed and have an MOT and bodily looks lovely. Leather interior looks OK too.
Oh, it's an automatic which might put me off in itself.

I posted a link to the buyers guide on this thread. It does sound cheap, so you need to check everything before you buy it. Servicing is important, and a cam belt change in the last 4 years regardless of mileage is a must. There needs to be a check for crank end play if it's an auto, as thrust bearing failure is terminal for the engine.
If its got loads of good recent history then no reason why not.
Check everything is working and it runs as it should, if not then its a bit of a liability, these cars use a vaccuum system to operate a lot of the systems and if it starts going wrong not many people know how to figure it out (unless you know one of these experts).
They are very nice to use, will just about give 20+ mpg on a run, every journey is an event in a 928 and they attract a lot of nice attention - ie what is that?
No reason why it should ruin you, will drink lots of fuel around town, try and use someone like Leighs garage in Fulham or Paul Anderson to look after it, dont go mad trying to make it perfect, just run it and enjoy it. Oh and just ignore the internet the doom-mongers if they havent actually owned one they wont actually know what they are talking about!! (what sort of advice is that?)

Actually - and sadly - in current climate S4s can struggle to make 3K, though you can pay 3x that for a really well looked after example. These cars are fundamentally so good they get under your skin, so you can find yourself addicted to spending on them!
Get someone who knows them well to check it out. Once you get to know them you can find £000s needing doing in a casual few minutes inspection. But if you're buying it that cheap it may be worth it - they are wonderful cars, one of the best true GTs of all time
