Hello everyone - perhaps you can help.

I have recently moved the study at home into a room upstairs with no phone socket and as of yesterday have had BT Broadband activated at home ( new BT broadband modem arrived this morning).

What piece of gadgetry do I need to plug the modem in downstairs and yet have it connect with the computer upstairs to enable me to log on to the web without having to put in a new bt socket.

thanks in advance.

problem.. BT modem is exactly that, has a phone plug and a USB socket...

The only way to use that without buying extra hardware is to run a cable up to your study..

Alternatively, buy a wireless router/modem (loads on the market!) and a wireless network card for your PC (you can get USB ones, so no opening of computer required).. then follow setup instructions to get it working..

Personally, I reckon a cable run would be easier!!!

thanks, any ideas on router model etc or am I better just walking into PC world, explaining to them and parting with the cash.

The optoin of running a cable up is a little messy as the rooms are diagonally opposeed to each other as well as being on different levels.

there's a myriad of products on the market that will do the job, it's just a case of selecting one..

You will need a router that includes the broadband modem, there are routers on the market that do not so that is something to watch out for..

It's also worth making sure that both of your wireless devices are compatible with one another..

PC world, (if you get a good member of staff!) should be able to do the job..

Why will he need a router with a modem if he already got a modem from BT? From the topic I posted about wireless networking it would seem that you connect the modem to the router if you already have the modem. I may be completely wrong as I have no idea what i'm wittering on about.

The problem is that the modem supplied by bt has one phone connection and one usb connection..

to be able to plug a modem into a router you would need an ethernet modem that presented an RJ45 connection to the router, which unfortunately the BT modem does not do..
