The pork addiction has flared up again and I would appreciate any thoughts that may help the afflicted... Currently have 996 Turbo S manual as daily drive which i like as its a bit rare, but for some reason it just hasn't got under my skin like my 964. I think its maybe the turbo element which, whilst great fun, doesn't have the immediacy of na. So am considering a switch, but to what? For a daily drive not in London (don't need 4 seats) with max budget of say £45k what P car would you go for??? Lots of ideas in my head such as 6GT3 (too hardcore?) 993 (too old?) 964 C4 update project (waste of cash?) I could go on but think its time to canvas the views of the experts!

Cheers

The new Boxster S - 2 boots, good fuel economy, and a LOT of fun! Though you'll end up adding 10-15k of options, you might be able to get a good discount...

Or for sub £25k you could get an 'old timer' RS60 like mine which growls and screams, and is almost as much fun...

I think the Cayman R would be a fantastic daily drive!

I had a test drive in one and can't remember beingso impressed by an car in a while, especially the way it handles (changes lanes) at high speed.

For a daily car that is fun it has to be a Boxser S or Cayman S....more affordable to run than a 911, both are point and shoot and draw less attention than a 911. Also both have 2 useable boots that you can get quite a lot of stuff in. Oh and the added benefit of none of the engine issues that seem to be plaguing the 911's of late!

I've driven all the Cayman models, the R is in a different class the 2.9 and 3.4S.

PDK Cayman R would be fantastic, great for a blast when stressed or leave it in Auto when cruising, did an extended test drive in one and was very impressed. Gives u the best of both world.

Thanks for the advice! Hadn't considered a Cayman as have always had 911s so will add that to the test drive list esp. the R. Have booked in a 6GT3 for next week as well so will hopefully have a clearer view of things then. I think I'll also throw in a 993 na NB for completeness.

Happy driving.

Cheers

Considering your '996T hasnt got under my skin like my 964' comment, and your 45k budget for a 'daily driver', its got to be a 996GT3 or Cayman R.

Found it woefully underpowered when I had it for a loan car, and the steering delicacy of the gen 1 987 boxster had been softened a fair bit.

Amazed nobody's suggested a 3 year old 997.2 C2S PDK. Must be available around that price bracket and probably from OPC with dealer 2 year warranty.

No IMS/RMS. New engine now well proven. PDK great for daily use or track. Depreciation far smaller than on a newer Cayman R or Boxster.

OP doesn't need four seats, but let's face it, a 911 doesn't have 4 seats!! What's not to like?

If you want to betruly engaged in traffic as well as country lanes, and you want something you can really cherish and look back over your shoulder at everytime you walk away, then it can only be a 964C2 or a 993C2. Proper weighty rear engined dynamics, you can't beat it for involvement.

Everything else would by comparison be too capable or too boring or too synthetic or too dull at low speed or too mass produced.

If you do prefer modern cars though then id go for a basic vanilla 997S, possibly with a warranty.

By that logic surely a 3.2 Carrera or CS would be better still?

Too old, heavy, recalcitrant for the majority of people IMO as an everyday P. Not to denigrate them of course but just to keep them in perspective.

Thats the point, the 64 and 93 are in the sweet spot. New enough to be everyday and reliable and not rust buckets but old enough to be full of feel, proper porsche heavy control weights and giving the driver the starring role. The build on them makes them as relevant today as they were in the early/mid 90's.

+1

Also, people forget what a great car the base 997 Carrera (non-S), is. In terms of pork I too have only ever had 911's, and if I wanted a porker as a daily driver I'd most probably go for either a C2 or C2S PDK. Currently have a 997.1 GT3, and wouldn't use it as a daily driver as its just too damn special for that. (I therefore run a Fiat 500 twinair as well for shopping trips and commuting). Good luck with your search OP!

If you are seriously considering a 996GT3 as a daily driver, may I suggest that you try it on the northbound Blackwall Tunnel approach at about 8.30 one morning. That may well change your mind. However, I have one and its for sale so..............

Main reason being the Boxster and Cayman engines are much less stressed than in a 911....lower bhp/torque, also lighter etc... From what I have heard from porsche specialists and on the forums is that the 997's have had some rather serious issues requiring complete engine replacement (amongst other things).
