hi,

a friend of mine has just applied for a civilian job with the police, and has to pass a "push 35kg pull 35kg" test

does anyone know anything about this? i'm assuming it's pushing/pulling a weighted trolley or something similar?

i'm going to help her with her training.

also, is there a "bleep test" app for i-phones?

thanks in advance

The push/pull test is on an ergometer, similar to a static rowing machine, and is fairly easy. Not sure about the bleep test bit but the general level is 5.4 which would not trouble an asthmatic tortoise.

Its a resistance machine and is almost embarassingly easy. I can't help with a bleep test app, but if she can run for a bus she will pass the current bleep test (5/4).

5.4? The "Fat Kid" in my class at school managed more than ten. It nearly killed me doing one more bleep than him... wink

That bleep test level seems a bizarre requirement - a complete blimp could get 5.4, it says nothing about the fitness of the candidate, so why bother?

think years of fairly heavy smoking haven't helped, she's been off them for 8 weeks now, so hopefully by her retest she'll be fine

i guess a rowing machine would be a good investment for the pushpull test?

how can i set up my own bleep test for her. i think a bit of nerves has probably not helped here, and just doing it over and over would help her confidence as well as her actual fitness

thanks for replies so far

frankly the current test is a joke. Any person with the slightest bit of fitness should pass.

Bench pressing (or seated row weights machine) for the push pull, combined with the rower (max effort rather than time spent)

Bleep test: Mark one out in a car park and do it. You can download them on mp3.

It will be easy, but a bit of training will give her the confidence not to let it worry her.

This.

5.4 on the bleep was incredibly easy.

Are there annual fitness tests for the Police as there is for the Armed Forces?

I wonder how many more people would be caught if the coppers could keep up with the suspect!

The amount of fat coppers I see is fking disgusting, how they can command any respect is beyond me.

The Armed Forces fitness test was a waste of a time.

Cheers for editing my post wink

I agree entirely but they is significantly harder than anything the Police do. The new OFTs are at least slightly more relevant than the 8 mile bimble and the 1.5 mile sprint!

I have no time for fat unfit soldiers either.

This thread reminds me of the local PCSOs. They're in their twenties but at almost twice their age, I could run (large) rings around them. Their size does not give me confidence that they will prevent crimes.

I didn't think youi could become a police officer unless you were under 5.6 and had shares in the pie shop. Catch a criminal you couldn't catch a cold son, I see the segways making it onto the force's soon good forbid they should be made to walk the beat like the old days.

When I eventually understood your post I realised you weren't a police officer.

I see one typing mistake enlighten me. Not a police officer just an observation of surrey police officers and PCSO's. Don't call me if NSPIS or your airwave equipment breaks though.
