Oil top up, OK to mix?
Discussion
My 996 needs an oil top up (3 months til next service - and I checked the dip as well as the dash gauge, it's near the min). However, I'm not sure what oil is in there and I won't now be able to speak to my indy (Northway) until Monday. I have some Mobil 1, 0W-40, "ACEA A3" spec, which a bit of RTFM tells me is fine - but it also says not to mix oils... will it really hurt (i.e. until it's all changed at the service in April) if it is a different oil in there already?
(other option - speak to Northway on Mon and top up in the dark after work!)
Cheers, Pup

Im not in the same league as you and my A3 1.8T is pretty leggy but I have done this without detriment.I just make sure the viscocity is correct and check whether it has to be fully or semi synth. But as I say im not running a finely balanced and tuned machine like yours so ignore everything I just wrote
Might be worth a look in here though http://www.911uk.com/

Just found this bit of information on the above mentioned forum.
15) If you need to top up your engine oil, how important is it to use exactly the same brand and type?
Not very important at all. Unfortunately, due to arse covering reasons we cannot print this advice on the can! Although officially all manufacturers advise against mixing different makes and grades, in fact there is very little chance of any harm being done, even if one is a mineral 20W/50 and the other is a 5W/30 synthetic. Obviously, avoid this if you can, but do not panic if there is no other alternative. Just dont mix 2 stroke and 4-stroke oil!
