Hi folks,

I am considering an EP3 Type R for around the £3000 mark, with 100,000 or so miles on the clock, my only concern at this point being their fuel efficiency.

I will be doing a mixture of fast A roads and crawling traffic, 5 days a week.

What mpg have owners had from experience?

Mid to high 20's. You may get low 30 on a run, but it will never ever be classed as 'frugal'

26 mpg just isn't high enough. I may as well get a Saab 9-5 Aero, 50 more bhp and vastly superior midrange grunt. I just want something that can be described as 'rapid', but won't break the bank with fuel costs.

To be honest, it's not the kind of car for creeping along in traffic on A roads. You'll never see its sublime side whilst you're sitting there going nowhere. Fair enough if you were going to be flying down B roads on the way to work.

The Saab will not be a MPG wonder (and they're not particularly fast, even in Aero and HOT spec), nor do they handle very well but it will be comfier than the Type R which sounds like something you will appreciate.

Not very fast off the line, but aren't these Saab 9-5 Aero's surprisingly quick 40-70 mph? I remember Clarkson describing it as "faster than a 911 Turbo from 40-70". Needs to be taken with a pinch of salt though.

30mpg on the motorway, 20-22 everywhere else. Had one from new for a few years.

I regularly got over 40mpg out of mine on longer runs (over 400 miles from a tank was not uncommon for motorway driving). I get 25mpg out of my 350z according to the trip computer and do roughly the same number of miles on a tank of petrol as my EP3 did, the only difference being that the 350z is £90 to fill up and the EP3 was more like £60.

As long as you don't spend your whole time chasing the vtec zone, I always thought that the Civic was relatively frugal for the performance that was available.

I averaged 27 mpg over the 18 months I had mine.
