last time I took the trumpet base off I heard a nut or bolt drop. Searched for it but couldn't find. Took the plenum off today and found this sitting on the trumpet base. I can only imagine that it was thrown back up

Dizzy? Or throttle linkage?

It's off the throttle linkage, the one where the butterfly return spring sits over. just goes to show you should leave well alone when you don't know what you are doing.rolleyes

I think I have been very fortunate, if it had been a smaller nut it may well have gone further into the internals and God knows what damage may have occured.

I wouldn't go that far. If you always only did stuff you fully understood, you'd never learn anything new or progress. You'll not do this a second time. Everyone learns from mistakes. The ones that seem to know everything have just made lots of mistakes !

Theres a fair amount of damage on that nut Barry.
Your engine may seem to be running ok but it doesnt take a lot to bend a valve.

A compression test may tell a story.

The funny part is there was no need to remove that throttle linkage in the first place as the other plenum had its own attached. You only needed to release the cable. hehe

Wouldn't it miss fire if a valve had bent?

Not sure on that one Barrie.
If there is any damage it may be slight to just 1 inlet valve. There is a possibility that the nut visited other inlets before settling on the trumpet base.

I will bring my compression tester a week on Tuesday/wed, unless you want to get it done sooner for peace of mind.
Remove all the plugs, isolate the spark, open the throttle and test each pot and record the pressures for 1 and 3 strokes and then max pressure reached in number of strokes.
Then post all the data on here and someone like Pumaracing wil tell you just how healthy everything is...... or isnt.

A leak down test will confirm,

I had 12/16 valves leaking over 30% when I tested mine, some were 70-80%
