I have collected up to 11 years NCB. As maximum discount tends to be around 5-6 years - am I right not to bother protecting my NCB discount as if in the unfortunate event I made a claim, I would just reduce by a year which is already way above 5-6 yrs ?

Have a look to see how much it's costs to protect your NCD. I did yesterday and found it was only £2!

Its worth protecting if you have a named driver on your policy.

For example, you have your other half on the policy. She crashes your car, so she loses her NCB. Often, you will lose a portion of your NCB as well. If it is protected, you wont lose that.

However, often it isn't worth it. I just checked to see how much diference there is between 3 and 6 years NCB for a fifty year old woman, and it is fourty pounds.

I was under the impression the majority of insurance companies drop you down from full to 2 or 3 years NCB in the event of a single fault claim.

My insurance company said two years lost for every claim. There are no rules for NCB though, and every company is different, so it's impossible to be 100% correct.

My current car policy also states 2 years lost from maximum in the event of a claim if you do not have protected NCB. Every policy I have had in the past (from various different companies) have been either 2 or 3 years.

Agreed that some companies may wipe all NCB in the event of a claim however I have not personally come across one that does.

Me either, as far as I'm aware the companies I've been have always taken 2 years off.

This is correct, but check what your insurers max is.

As if it 4 years and reduces by 3 years following a claim. My guess is that you will almost be held to ransom as their price on 1 year will be better than anyone elses.

If max is 9 years and reduces by 2 years. Then will leave you with 7. So pretty good terms all in all. Just read the small print.

Op if you have 11 years NCB and no protection, should you have a claim the insurer removes 2 years from the maximum NCB which is generally 5 years.
So you would drop from 11 years down to 3 years NCB.
Anything over and above 5 years doesn't really matter the additional years may have a slight affect onn your premium but it's the maximium NCB that the insurer looks at removing in a claim.
