1st Porsche, budget and running costs an issue, mechanically confident amatuer. Budget around £6k for a car. Which means a Boxster at the bottom of the price range, or a really nice 944S2. Used for the road only at weekends and special occassions.

Would like opinions from those that have owned and run both cars. Is the 944 too old, hows the driving expeirence vs the boxster?

Finacialy with classic insurance, plenty of used parts, and better condition, if older cars for similiar money, I am leaning towards the 944S2, but having read so much about how great the Boxster is to drive, Im having trouble making up my mind. Decissions, decissions.

PS used the search but firefox keeps timing out.

S2 coupe or cab ?
The 944 gives the the classic ownership experience, and cheap insurance. Plus if I may say a little Kudos to be driving a car you dont see every day on the roads.
The Boxster gives you a more modern drive with roof down fun if thats what you want.
As Boxsters get cheaper, this is a common dilema now for buyers. Top money for a classic 944/968 coupe, or similar money for a more mass produced but modern looking Boxster ?

You really have to think hard about what it is you want, not just the upfront price.

The 944 could cost you more to run. Check prices for common jobs and intervals at which they might need doing. I have a 944 S2 and some jobs on it are quite time consuming so cost more than a more modern Porsche. Parts are still expensive too, especially OEM. Not sure if you have to change the belts on an S but on an S2 these need doing every 4 years or 40K (iirc).

Never driven a Boxster so can't comment but you need to drive both yourself because they will be very different. I took my 944 out for a spin yesterday for the first time in ages and really enjoyed it. It's been replaced my a 996 turbo but I still enjoy the old girl. It's got a lovely sense of balance and a nice engine that you have to work. But I think I just like 80's cars because its my era. I am going to strip it out for some track work later in the year which should be a good project.

I have owned both a 944S and now have a Boxster. The 944 is a great drive, but watch out for rust as this can be expensive to fix as these cars are now over twenty years old. Engine wise just lift the bonnet and you can do the little mainenance jobs, plugs, filter etc. But remember this is still a Porsche and parts don't come cheap, but they are built like Victorian bridge. The boxster is a great drive to and now offer good value, plenty to choose from. Service history is a must. Hope you get what you want, but drive both first.

I had to replace both sills on mine for the last MOT. It has cost me a lot over the last 3 years but I didn't buy as wisely as I should have done.
