Seven Point One - Speaker Recommendations.

I recently splashed out on a good-as-new, ex demo Sony STR-DA2400ES receiver off of Ebay and have completed the set-up with a matching Sony Blu-Ray player.

I had my old system set up for 6.1 sound, but this new one offers 7.1 loveliness.

Therefore, I need a pair of small, discrete speakers to take up the 7.1 mantle (and another length of speaker cable).

Any recommendations as to a suitable pair? I did have a couple of small Sony jobs from my very first surround system which would have been ideal, but I appear to have chucked them out.

The obvious answer I supposed is to try and get something to match what you already have ? Why not have a look at the AV Forums classifieds and see if there's anything that catches your eye?

My 5.1 speakers are Gales. They do a monitor range, but they're not exactly small or discrete.

I'm thinking some Bose-esque cube type speakers.

The obvious question to ask is what's your budget. It depends on how much room you have, but a good cheap pair are wharfedale 9sr or 10sr. They're small and are only about 4 inches deep so fit on the wall or whatever easily. If you've got more money, then get something from monitor audio, like the R180s although they're a bit bigger. If you have more money, then get something like XTZ 99.26. Once again, bigger and better. It's impossible to say without you mentioning budget. I don't think I'd go for Bose though no matter what.

I'd be willing to spend up to £100 on the speakers. I've been looking at these.

Are these Gales too big then as they are only 215mm x 130mm and 150mm deep?

More chance of matching in with what you already have, although to be fair IMHO it's not so critical having matching surrounds to the fronts, but it might help having something vaguely similar.

The other point is that unless the surround backs can be set a good metre or more behind you then the extra spaciousness of 7.1 might be a little lost. If your sofa is against the back wall then you might not get much if any benefit. FWIW I have my surround backs over 2 metres behind me and use Tripole side surrounds (which are above, but each each side of my seat).
