....'Only the last few built in 2005 were LOVINGLY HAND-BUILT, OFF ASSEMBLY (same as the £300K 250GT); with higher 489BHP achieved on those late specially tuned 05 "S" engines only, (officially X50 450, but vastly superior); apparently due to the use of power boost Maps from the GT2 used as a "last Hurrah" for the very last 996s built.'
Really?
Enlighten me, chaps

I've heard this rumour before about the last S models having same map as then GT2. I've driven a 2005 S and it felt stronger than the 450bhp and official porsche performance figures suggest. Was easily as quick as a 997 turbo IMO. Perhaps the last few were built off the main production line too as Porsche geared up with new tooling for 997. Doubt they were hand built but rest makes sense as the two cars were sold side by side for a bit.
I'm yet to see any magazine figure turboS faster than X50 - which with an extra 30hp odd should not be the case if the rumours were true !!
On that basis alone I don't believe it but I believe it is the case that the later turboS came with the crankcase of the 997 turbo which is reinforced further.
