Is a Boxster cheaper to run than a 911?
Discussion
Maybe an obvious answer, maybe not. I've been building up to getting something with two seats for a bit of fun and can't decide what to go for - likely a 987 Boxster or a Z43.0/M. I was just wondering how much (if at all) cheaper a Box is compared to a carrera of similar vintage. Tyres and servicing look a bit cheaper, but otherwise is it fairly similar? Used to 996 running costs btw. What differences in the s or non s?
I went from a 986 boxster to 996 turbo 18 months ago.
Servicing is slightly cheaper on the boxster, but not a great deal. Parts are broadly similar in price when things go wrong.
Insurance went from £290 to £500.
Fuel in the boxster was around 27 mpg whilst the turbo gets 20 mpg. Not a massive amount but the turbo only likes shell v power and looses a lot of power when run on anything else, in the boxster it didn't really matter what fuel you put in.
Tyres are a big difference, around £450 for the boxster and £1000 for the turbo, and on top of that it eats em for brekky.
Hope this helps.

I suspect if you can afford to run a Boxster comfortably then you can afford to run a 911 of pretty much any vintage. Whether you prefer the actual or not is a completely different matter of course.
Cmoose is correct though when mentioning about a lot of the parts being identical. Other than the cost of fuel with the bigger engines, I'd suggest that the cost difference is marginal at best.

Have had a 986 & 987 & am looking at changing at the moment to something better, have looked at newer Boxsters, 997s and V8 Vantages. The Vantage crucifies you on fuel & servicing. The important thing to remember is to compare like with like. The guy above who was paying £450 for Boxster tyres, that would be for 16" or 17" - a set of 19" tires on my Boxster is still £1200. Fuel varies across the models - a new 991 will be more efficient than an old Boxster. 987.2S claims 40mpg on the highway & that's pretty frugal. As ohers have said many parts are shared, some of the newer Boxsters & the 991 are not in the top tax band either any more
