Now HID's are illegal what is the next alternative? I don't want to go back to standard H4 bulbs as they were were useless?

As far as I know they'll need to be self levelling and have a 'wash' facility if retro fitted

CATS or removal of could be interesting too!

as i understood it, no problem with HiDs as long as fitted, operating as aimed correctly.

if and where fitted to a vehicle that has wash jets and/or self-levelling, then the washers and/or self-levelling must work

Problem with HID's in general is the light source is not in the same point as it is on an H4, so a refector designed to have a specific focal point for the H4 filliments will now bounce light at the wrong angles, hence the issue to other road user. This is worse on cars with conventional reflectors, more than projector type lamps. To sooner the police start to presicute all the local Chav's with these fitted to Cosa's and the like the better. Back to the origional issue, you can get better spec' halogens like the Osram nightbreaker range that are totally legal.

Would they not be legal if fitted as high beam where they would not interfere with other road users in normal use.
Debate would come if they are fitted as low beam when alignment becomes important.

Received via PM from an MOT tester:-

1) it has to have a DCR mark on light (if fitted then you need 3/4) will need to check this bit
2) put out more than 2000 lumium of light ( how the hell we are to work that out i have no idea)
3) you will not need washers
4) you will not need self levelling lights
if in doubt pass and advise comes in to play. as long as the tester has made a note then he cant get pulled up at a later date.
it also states that HID lights MAY have washers and leveling, if fitted then it must work.

its all the other rules thats going to cause problems, i have just got in a autodiagnos to help my customers get through a test by turning of all the faults that show on the dash.
even the rubber dust caps on a trackrod end are now a fail. how many people use a ball joint spliter to remove it.
hope this is of help

Worst case - swap them for Halogens come MOT time? Not a hard job with the old style lights at least.. Just like running decats and swapping back to cats come MOT time.. ?

But I don't see them being an issue with any 'TVR friendly' MOT station tbh

Maybe he got that bit off Star Trek. I don't think it exists.

This sounds right to me. After all, TVR fitted HIDs to a lot of the later cars as standard equipment or an option and they don't have washers or self-levelling. Can't see the new regulations requiring manufacturer fitted equipment to be removed, and how would an MOT tester tell if the HIDs were fitted by TVR or as an after-mkt accessory?

I seem to recall that, when I retrofitted my HIDs, there was a self levelling mechanism in the car. NO washers though...

Main beams were the only HIDs that TVR fitted from the factory, dipped beams were always the candle light H4s.

Edited to add: if it will eventually be like the rest of Europe, you'll have to have both self levelling and washers, even when retrofitted.
