It's my bros birthday coming up and amongst other things he wants a torque wrench (probably for changing wheels etc over). I have about £50 to spend....what's good? Any advice\links appreciated - I'm out of touch when it comes to tools.

ps, rather not have a Halfauds special unless people honestly think they cut the mustard....or at least tightens the mustard.

Thanks in advance.

I bought a Halfrauds one,
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/...

It was about £50 with a trade card. I've used it alot and I'd buy another.

At that price point they are pretty much all the same anyway.

What he is using it for is more important, if it's just for wheels a half inch drive one is best. If building an engine you'd want a three eights drive.

Try and get one with the most useable range of settings on it too smile

The halfords torque wrenches are good bits of kit, as are all their pro tools. I know a profresional mechanic that uses them for work, he says it has never failed a calibration check. I use one for home mechanic duties and it is a good wrench.

Teng tools do them for around that price, The 1/2" one is £62 from screwfix as shown in the link below. They can be had for around £50 brand new from ebay.

I've got a Halfords Pro one and it seems pretty indestructible despite regularly being used as a breaker bar.

Looks like a draper one which has been painted red.

The Halfords stuff is all Draper and it has had favourable comments so far on this thread.More than likely comes out of the same factory in the far East...

Halford Pro/Advanced are all Draper Expert. They let the cat out of the bag when they gave me a Draper part number for an NLA ratchet repair kit...

I've heard good things about a silverline one, only £20 too on Amazon (was £15 the other day!)

I understand that this was probably posted tongue in cheek, but if you bought something at a good price and are willing to buy another, is it really fair to use 'Halfrauds'?

yes I couldn't justify spending more than 4 times that on 'Snap On'.

Seems to have faired quite well I've had mine around 2 years I think.

Just quoting the OP. I got a halfords pro tool set when I was an apprentice and most of it is still going strong apart from the usual torx bits. The 3/8 ratchet lasted 8 years and I wasn't very gentle with it.

I've got a DRAPER one, £47 from local factors. Lovely bit of kit.

Well built, easy to use, and plenty of leverage.

Not up there with snap-on et al. But for the home enthusiast, spot on.
