I have this idea haunting me.
I wanna get Gaz 24 or Gaz 21 and drop some 300BHP into it (at some point in future).

Reasons:
-I like well restored classics
-I like muscle cars
-This will be truly unique in UK
-Both, the donor shell and the donor drivetrain can be acquired for peanuts.

Now I am ok with a spanner, but lack real experience or knowledge, but will have a garge at my disposal and my dad is a highly skilled aircraft engineer. Though he doesn't live in the UK anymore he has taken apart car engines, did engine swaps etc. so I should be able to consult him.

I see supercharged jags can be had for under 2k nowadays, that's 370bhp (though it's the nikasil ones, which might be an issue?)

So- Can someone describe the process to me please of optimal way of taking a soviet era body and dropping an english drivetrain into it?

cheers

No problem, just get the soviet era body and drop the drive train in. Job done

Thanks, so just re-use everything from the jag? the engine the tranny, the loom, torpedo, suspension?
I assume things can be changed around shifted about even if the body dimensions are different? i.e. the wheelbase on the jag is longer.

Learn to weld. Go sign yourself up for an evening college course. I did, a few months ago, best thing i've done for a while.

If you want to make an engine fit where it doesn't belong, you'll need a welder, and some skills.
Actually wanted to for a while now. Even learnt how mto make an arc welder out of two microwave ovens biggrin
cheers for the tip!

Get a mig welder. A decent one.

I could weld a bit before hand, and i thought what i wanted from the course, was to get better at setting the machine up, depending on what i was welding. But it turned out my technique was pretty st too.

Sounds like a fun project, if you go for it, you have to make a build thread.
Most defnitely will. As much as I am itching to jsut go for it without planning or preparation now. realistically it's a good year away still.
Which one do you think will be better suited/looking

gaz 21

or

gaz 24

am leaning towards the first one but the well sorted ones are already regarded as classics and are a bit dearer to buy. Seeing as i do not plan to retore it to original spec I question the financial sense of doing it.

Can I get away with a compltely shagged donor car? since I presumably would be stripping it to barebones anyway?

Also, assuming the same price, what would make more sense?
A supercharged 1998 XJ with 370 HP and lots of miles
or a 4.2 NA 300HP S-type of 2003 and lots but fewer miles that the XJ

Like this, hope you are handy with a MIG and have plenty of time, space, money and a patient other half !
